If there is no encryption or a weak encryption (WEP) it means that someone can listen to your internet communication even without being connected. So:
- every time you download a picture, you are showing it to your neighbors
- every time you visit a webpage you are showing it to your neighbors
- every time you log in to an account, you shout your password login in the street.
- every time you send en e-Mail you shout the content of your e-mail in the street.
- every time you chat on msn,icq or what ever all your conversation is being shouted in the street.

LOUD AND CLEAR

So people saying that they don't care about pirates .. think again a bit about what you are doing.

just use WPA ! It takes 2 mins to configure it. It is even easier to use. And it does NOT slow significantly the communication.

Jesus christ! Who actually cares? Your making out that you need to cover your back constantly, as though being on the internet is a crime.

I dont bother with WEP or WPAx encryption. MAC address protection has done me fine, it's simple and if any of my mates want to use my internet while at my place, it just add them on the list.

A hacker will always be 3 steps ahead of technology, no matter what. Because it is what they do. If they wern't they'd be more of a slacker than a hacker. So a hacker is going to get in, no matter what you do. No matter how much security features you have. And to be honest, I couldn't care less. If someone wants to jump onto my piss poor connection without my consent, so be it. Because I don't have the time to be constantly changing my security settings, just to stop some hacker, who is probably going to get in anyway.

So every time I download a picture, fine. My neighbours can see it too. I have nothing to hide. I couldn't care less. My neighbours are pensioners who haven't even heard of a computer. Your exaggeration is the funniest thing i've seen in a while.

this is BS.

Maybe ou dont mind exposing your private life to other. Maybe other do.

Not having something to hide does not mean that I want everybody to see it.

As said previously, it is more difficult to maintain a list of mac addresses that to just use the WPA. Why the f.... are people so afraid of using it ????

It looks like you are a real master since you say that it is possible to hack WPA. I'd like to see you hacking a WPA/AES with a string password.

BTW, you do not need to change constantly the setting of WPA ... why would you ?

Seriously, your post is useless and is actually really not helping the OP.

this is BS.
What is? The whole quote? Because I can tell you, it is certainly not BS that I only use MAC address protection.

I am not exposing my private life. Nor am I exposing anything that I do on my computer. My private life and my computer are two separate things. And no1 is looking at either.

What exactly are you on about here?

As said previously, it is more difficult to maintain a list of mac addresses that to just use the WPA. Why the f.... are people so afraid of using it ????
It certainly is not. It is a lot easier just to add peoples computers to a list, rather than remember a complicated passcode. Or even set a passcode. But the way this is done entirely depends on your internet supplier. Ah... how ironic... i smell BS....

Ha, I think it's best just to leave you in that frame of mind methinks.

BTW, you do not need to change constantly the setting of WPA ... why would you ?
Because you security conscious people do that. My paranoid friends do.

Seriously, your post is useless and is actually really not helping the OP.
He asked for a way to block wireless internet users. I was seconding MAC address protection. And also flaming at a guy who obviously thinks wireless internet security is a matter of life and death.

Of coarse, by all means, add a WPA passcode. I'm not telling people not to. I'm just trying to state that your life will not be in next week's Daily News if you don't. Please don't have a go at me again. It's obvious to see you didn't read the whole of the thread and all of it's posts.

Thankyou sir.

Yes your entire post is BS. The OP is asking how to secure his wifi and you say that a MAC filtering is enough.
sorry

Roadbloc most people use online banking or some other such thing that exposes them. If all you do is play WOW and chat under some made up alias then yeah you don't have much to worry about.

Wow lots of action on this thread lol, I appreciate the advice and it's helping a lot so I just need a little direction on how to do this.

I am going to switch to WPA2, I believe the wireless modem/router I got from verizon accepts it as it shows it as an option in the network edit settings. Now the problem is I'm the only one who has a mac in the house, I need to set the password for my moms windows laptop and man that's such a pain to do. I don't see how windows make it so difficult to make three or four applications to set up the internet: One for direct cable connection, one for wireless, then the wireless card. I hate windows..........

Now I actually know the person who cracked the WEP password, its my loner of a cousin while I allow him to use my internet he boastfully should me some kind of windows xp program that cracks WEP networks. More of a reason I'm doing this is cause he gets on my nerves and sometimes I feel like reminding him who pays the DSL, and cutting him off from my network seems like a good reminder.

However I have noticed while I'm asleep and everyone else it, seems sometimes someone in my neighborhood is leaching off me as I see the activity light blink on the modem. Can someone tell me how on my mac do I find these MAC addresses? In any cases if anyone ever comes over to my house and wants to connect, i have to give them the password for the network (which I don't remember off the top of my head) so I don't mind finding these MAC addresses to block off.

There doesn't seem a point to shut off the SSID if I got it locked right? Thanks guys all the info and pointers I can get really help.

If the leaching is happening during the night, just turn the modem off until you get WPA2 set up.

Once you get that going, no one is going to be leaching. The sheer amount computer power needed to break the encryption used by WPA2 in a reasonable amount of time is very hard to come by. It's possible to break any encryption given enough computer and time; however, WPA2 with a strong password will take so long that it becomes impractical.

Actually depeding on your router, many consumer grade routers offer the ability to only allow certain Mac Addresses to connect and receive an IP.

It takes a single command in terminal to change your MAC address to whatever you want. Using passive stumblers you can tell what MAC addresses are using the base station, so if I am the intruder, I just give my machine the same MAC address as an authorised client and I am in.

Jesus christ! Who actually cares?
When they are banging on the door asking why you have been downloading pictures of young children in compromising positions then you will care! Seriously, its not just about what people can see you doing, you are being held responsible for the use of the connection and people with things to hide will use unsecured networks to download things they shouldn't.

That's another important point. When somebody uses your wifi, it is the owner who is responsible for whatever happens.

@andyx181x, which version of Windows are your other computers running ?

If the have the Service Pack 2 or 3 it should be difficult. Just double ckick on the wifi computer on the right side of the taskbar to open the list visible wlan, double click on yours and enter the wpa passphrase.

If this doesn't work (instead of the list you see something like the "Windows wifi manager is disables") it's possible that it's a software that came with your wlan card which manages the wifi connection. In that case, use the software to connect the pc.

alright dude heres what u can do, you can setup a more secure network security, or you can hide your router so that u need the name and password to get in. once u do one of those, if you suspect that guy is still on ur router, then if u have a pc, i would think u would have xp or later. anyway go into command prompt, type in "net view" without the quotes and hit enter. now u should see something like, //(COMPUTER NAME)-PC, now type in tracert (COMPUTER NAME)-PC, and hit enter, do not type the //. now u should see an ip address to the left side of the window. now write down that ip, exit command prompt and reopen. now type "shutdown -i" with out the quotes. click on add, type the ip u wrote down, and your going to select in the drop down box "Shut down", then go to the bottom where u have space to type and type something such as, "GET OFF MY NETWORK AND DON'T COME BACK, THIS IS YOUR FIRST AND FINAL WARNING! NEXT TIME I CATCH YOU ON MY ROUTER I WILL SEND YOU A VIRUS!" now hit ok. now whats going to happen is that its going to display what you typed, and give him enough time to read it. then it will shut down his computer. this should scare him enough to get him to permanently stay off ur router. good luck! btw this is 100% legal so u wont get in trouble.

If you need to maintain a network accessible by WEP devices, then at least cascade your WEP router downstream from a WPA router.

WEP might keep out the random clown trying to poach some connectivity, but it's not going to keep out anyone actually interesting in or capable of doing no good and it is only going to provide you with a false sense of security.

But this work only if:
- the remote pc has Windows with SMB running
- if you are admin on both PCs with RCP enabled
... so a bit useless ;)

With the my AEBS, I wish I could more specifically managed those connected to my access point. With airport utility it would be a nice feature to be able to set a custom profile, bandwidth allowances, etc. for connected users. As it stands now you can only monitor connected clients, but not manage them.
