Mac OS 9 is probably the best operating system Apple has yet made - it works and there's no useless toys and fancy features slowing it down.

it was pretty good! i loved the simplicity of it all. i go back to it after months of not using it and can do everything as quickly as i could before! but i prefer Leopard/Tiger to OS9, OS9 is just lacking that usability.

I'm still using Mac OS 9 everyday on a 266MHz beige G3 mini-tower. I use it to run my own business, that includes using an older version of InDesign, etc. Believe me, it runs a lot faster than many of the iMacs I use elsewhere running Mac OS X ... including brand new aluminum iMacs with Mac OS X 10.5 and the previous version of InDesign. :)

The only real problem is that at the moment is my useless so-called Internet Service Provider  made changes to their servers and I can no longer even connect to the Internet (it simply won't authenticate the Mac OS 9 dial-up connection at their end) and they refuse to fix it, so I'm stuck using this hopless old Windows machine to get my emails. :(

they are still very popular! i sure hope it doesnt die anytime soon on you, my G3 Graphite iMac died about a year ago, it was very hard to see her go... :(

Come on, OS 8.6 kicked a**. OS 9 was a resource hog by comparison. Try running OS 9 with only 64MB of ram. I dare you. ;)

Well sure, if you only have 64 MB of RAM, I guess OS 8 would be a good choice...though in that situation, I'd try for System 7 if it was possible. :p ;) (I've just had terrible experiences with OS 8, over the past 11 years of using it.)

I'm really warming up to OS 9 now...been using it exclusively since I installed it, and as I'm learning more about it, it gets easier to use. (Classilla made a HUGE difference in web browsing.) I'm actually contemplating wiping OS X off of this machine and completely switching it to OS 9...

Sorry to keep bothering you guys, but does anyone know a good source for classic Mac OS freeware? LEM and Google aren't being very helpful...

OS9 was great

I actually had to move to OSX and I was not happy about it.

File management in OS9 still way better than OSX. But well, those were some other times and it was a better business for apple to create a new OS to keep people buying new computers and software having the same performance ina different gui.

But well... OS9 is nice, it has its personality but I had a lot of fun with it. I remember when the first chat rooms, spending hours in IRC, so adictive.

Check out the forums over at 68kmla.net. They're more heavily geared towards System 6 and 7, but in their software discussion board, they've got plenty of links to OS Classic software, even for OS 9.

I had this EXACT same problem if you don't want to dual boot you may have to delete the C drive by deleting all the folders inside sadly to my knowledge you NEED to a clean install once the C drive is deleted you can install macOS 9 it worked for me correct me if I'm wrong. oh, and I know I just dug up a 16-year-old grave, but I don't care this is for anyone having the same issue.
