Im a professional music producer using mac mini M1 2020, in the next month or two i will be upgrading to the mac studio. with macos Ventura released, im worried that macs including mac studio will start shipping with ventura eventually. i am currently on Monterey and i NEED to stay on monterey for now at least to continue working. what i am wondering is, is it possible to downgrade from ventura to monterey on a mac studio? i'm under the impression that macs can usually downgrade to the OS version that was around when it was released, or down to the version that came installed on them when they were released. for instance i think my mac mini 2020 can be downgraded to big sur if im not mistaken because big sur was the lowest version it shipped with on release.
Since mac studio released with monterey, would be possible to downgrade to monterey from ventura if i bought a mac studio later this year that already had Ventura?

You can clean install back to a prior MacOS version that the hardware first shipped with so for the Mac Studio it's Monterey. On M1 MBA, I go back and forth between Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura using the USB installer method.

Gotcha just want to double check what you’re saying. So you mean even if my future Mac Studio has venture let’s say in a month (probably not), i can still downgrade to Monterey because when the Mac Studio was first released like 5 months ago, it released with Monterey?

Based on the info above, you should be able to "take the Studio back" to Monterey.

But you'll have to "wipe it clean" and then re-install, using the USB installer.

Apple makes it possible, but not really "easy".

Hi guys, I am trying to resurrect this.
Some "tech" guys tells me that reverting to Monterey on a mac studio that was shipped with Ventura may cause all sorts of malfunctions because the firmware installed with Ventura may cause all sorts of problems...

Does that hold water in your opinion?

Thanks in advance!

No.

You will find that the firmware included with the latest (any?) Monterey is the same as that with first release of Ventura. Version 8419.41.10.
See: https://eclecticlight.co/2022/11/03/which-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-7/
and : https://eclecticlight.co/2021/09/02/which-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-6/

There have in the past been incompatibilities for specific Macs stepping back multiple versions of macOS. I have seen no reports of firmware compatibility between Ventura and latest Monterey on any Mac.

If in doubt ask Apple, but make sure you get to talk to someone who knows and doesn't just read from a script.

Note that on AS Macs, the term "firmware" is a bit of a misnomer - it is used to refer to the iBoot System Container on the internal disk. If disaster strikes and the internal disk is corrupted, you (or your Apple Repair) can recover macOS using a second Mac.

Can you confirm today it is possible? I have a costumer who needs Monterey but we ordered Mac Studio M1 Max and for sure no in June 2023 Mac Studio will come with Ventura

In terms of have I done it - no I can't confirm it is possible. But AFAIK, all Macs can install the version of macOS that was used for that model's first release.

Jack Neill -

According to everymac.com, the 2017 MBP 13" shipped OS 12.5.
It may have been a "special version" of 12.5, as well (relevant only to that model).
Could you have been trying to boot with a version of Low Sierra "earlier than" that?
