Possible to have macbook closed but still have computer running from a display?

I've just bought a Dell 2209WA. I'm struggling a little with colour profiles and monitor setting, not sure which is the best thing to do. I'll be working with some things that need to be printed out and some that are for web only. So I'm guessing I'll need to use different colour profiles depending on what I'm doing, is that right? Can anyone recommend some to me?

Another couple of questions:

1. Is it possible to close my macbook pro yet still have it working through my monitor? I have a wireless keyboard so it'd be preferable if I close close the mac and run the monitor from it.

2. When I have selected mirror displays in system prefs, my monitor goes all fuzzy, like the resolution has been reduced, or the sharpness, however the resolution has not shown to be changed in system prefs.

Works straight out of the box but the laptop needs to be plugged in to the mains, otherwise it'll only work with extended and mirrored mode.
