Is there any way of knowing which frequency band the iPhone 4 is connected to? Such as UMTS900 or UMTS2100?

Jump to Post #5 for solution

I ask as O2 UK have actually started rolling out 3G over 900MHz as well as the "old" standard 3G @ 2100MHz, and I really just want to check if it's anywhere around the University's buildings.

And here's the "evidence" that O2 have started the rollout: http://news.o2.co.uk/Press-Releases/O2-first-to-switch-on-new-superfast-3G-900MHz-network-2f8.aspx

Doesn't seem to tell what frequency you're using though.

Want to thank DBMandrake at 3GForum UK for finding out how to do this:

That method doesn't seem to work anymore. The downlink frequency looks empty.
