I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, and I'm hoping this is possible now: I'd like to set something up so that after a certain amount of idle time, the computer will switch to the fast user switching login window, but WITHOUT logging me out. I know I can set it up to log me out after a certain amount of time, but I have programs running (Air Video Server, BOINC) that I'd like to keep running. Thanks for any help you can provide.

1. System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Require Password immediately when sleep or screen saver begins.

2. Press Control+Shift+Eject to put display to sleep. If your keyboard does not have the Eject button, replace it with the Power button.

If you now press any key, it will give you the login screen.

Thanks very much, that was exactly what I was looking for. Now we can keep the kids from using our accounts in the middle of the night and stay logged in at the same time.
