I'm curious to install DP4, but will it be possible to update to GM once it comes out without having to start all over again?

    Based on history, yes.

    Not Quite

Base on the history I remember not being able to upgrade Lion from the last DP to GM.

I had to make a clean install.

I did on all my computers. As with any other beta/DP before it.

There is no reason you can’t upgrade to GM, well unless they actually went that extra mile and did something to it on purpose, but i don’t see why they would.

I too am curious about this, I have a 2010 MacBook Pro I am tempted to try DP4 on, but I wish also to upgrade to the final release when it arrives...

A clean install is not a problem to me as the MacBook Pro is only used for auxiliary duties since I got the iPad 3.

Yes, you can upgrade to GM. Worrked with Lion. (With Lion anyway) the GM and release version had the same build numbers so GM was release. Unless you feel the overwhelming desire to give a multi-billion dollar company your $20 lol

Huh? What are you saying? I am asking if it's possible to update from DP > GM. I don't mind $20, that's nothing. I rather pay that then $200+ for what other companies are charging for their OSes.

    Sounded rather simple.

Yes... From DP you can upgrade to GM

GM has same build number as release. So once you're on GM you no longer have any worries as you're basically on the release build.

Just wondering here if DP4 actually -is- the "golden master" release (with the actual release of ML being so close)...?

I doubt it. The GM will be called a GM by Apple. Last year Lion went from DP4 to GM. They seem to be following a similar schedule for ML.

Even Apple during their WWDC conference didn’t give any indication that this release was the final - they described it as “near complete” I believe.

GM’s are complete feature wise and is stable enough for general release. DP4 from what I have read still has some bugs that need fixing.

Will this work? I would rather not do a clean install. But I want the best battery life on GM so should I clean install or just upgrade?

With a major update, it is always better to start over instead of upgrading. I will do a clone of my HD, format an clean install, and then move everything by hand: mail, music, photo. I will get ride of all preferences cause there is tons of uninstalled app that leave files in your OS.

If you take a look at your computer, get the same state with a clean install is pretty straightforward: thanks to online services, almost everything important is backed up online.

(sorry for my bad english, i'm french)

    (based on last year)
Yes you are able to install GM over DP4
    BUT
As was the case last year, the build number may be different on the retail version. This doesn't mean there are any actual differences, just naming convention. Because of this if you wanted the retail version instead of GM (again, no actual difference) you would need to do a clean install.

It may be a psychological thing, but knowing I didn't have retail version lion messed with me and I did a clean install over GM.

Lion release build # was actually lower than GM. Yet, when Lion ws realeased if you were on GM it showed "Installed" in App Store.

GM will install fine over any DP I'm sure.

A clean install would probably be best coming from a Beta anyway.

Nope, the Lion GM and the Release differed by one build and you couldn't get 10.7.1 with the GM.

Nope, I was (still am) running the GM on my iMac and it has taken every point release with no issues.
