The display is better but all the marketing garbage is tedious. The new display does seem to have some limitations based on that photo - you can see the m+i in 'minutes' merging into one due to a lack of pixel space and the i+o in 'Commission' are joined at the hip too.
You are also looking at a photo at an angle.

You mean 326 ppi, not dpi, right? They're pixels not dots.

The 'p' in PPI is 'points'. PPI and DPI can be used interchangeably but PPI is a more correct term. DPI was apparently open for interpretation: some companies were counting each of the R, G, B pixels as 1 DPI.

So thats instead of whole words being mushed together. That's like saying, these new longer range binoculars lets me see people walking around on the boat way out in the ocean, but I can't make out what they're drinking.

Yeah, but you're not viewing it on a 3.5" screen are you? You're viewing it on a ~100dpi desktop monitor where you can see the pixels. If you're doing that, you should be sitting around 8 foot away from the screen (anyone care to do the maths?).

What was a blurry mess before (take the iPhone 4 screenshot and do a simple scale down in photoshop to half the size in both axes) is now a lot more clearer.

The only reason that you can see the pixels in the photo is because the digital camera has far better resolving power than the human retina.

Retina display is awesome, i really want iPhone 4... initially my plans were to stick with 3GS which is 100% enough for what need for work and fun... but i suppose i will buy iPhone 4 anyway... damn Steve ;-)

Love the display. I was toying with getting an iPad but honestly I'm glad I waited to get this (my first iPhone!)

Counting down the days...

The iphone screen is emitting light. Then you have the out-of-focus area. Then you have the sensor, then the hardware conversion, then the software conversion. Then finally you have the JPG here on MR. Are you sure you want to judge the screen quality this way? I mean for the pixels it's obvious, but for the "merged" letters?

so you can distinguish individual letters when fully zoomed out? I could barely read that screenshot when viewed at 100% on my monitor. On a 3.5" display the letters will be so small it'll be even worse.

Never mind pretending everyone will suddenly be able to read tiny text. It just makes stuff look nicer, its not going to make our lives measurably better. Thats fine too, nice stuff is good.

The text might not be raised, but with the new screen construction they say it looks as if the LCD is one with the glass. It should be fantastic!

At what % of zoom though? That screen is almost at macro levels of zoom, probably equivalent to holding the phone right at your eyeball, where you couldn't even focus on it.

Just by a rough comparison of lines (3 1/2 inches being about 15 lines in the zoomed in pic), I'd say it's roughly 600-800% real size in that screen...

Meaning you'd be blowing the full 3.5" to about 21-28" tall if you were seeing it like that in real life. Try that with the 3GS screen... and well, you can see the results in that original pic.

I agree the viewing quality will seem more 'natural' on the device itself. In the JPEG, the text is more legible than before but isn't pinpoint clear. The human eye will not notice the discrepancies I imagine, but then I don't really have a problem with the existing model. It's the marketing I find difficult to engage with. In other words, a useful upgrade, but not a miraculous turn of events.

Hmmmmm

I don't see all the fuss. The text in the iPhone4 image doesn't look any different than any other text on my screen. ;)

Screenshot date

Anyone notice that the screenshot of the New York Times website was taken January 30, 3009!

Obama was still talking about Wall Street bonuses (one of the articles).

yep, and that talk about exploring the Florida Keys by kayak. Not for long with all the oil looming......

There are no discrepancies.

Doesn't really matter. The two photos were made to show the relative size of the pixels. That is all.
Half of the photo is out of focus. It is a photo taken with a camera. I am pretty damn sure the "artefacts" you see are form the photo, not from the screen. Or do you really think some letters are darker than the others as wee see in the black text?

Honestly I've heard no one complain about the pixels on the iphone screen... period.

It's better obviously but who in their right mind is going to read a webpage fully zoomed out?

For a real comparison, if you're using firefox or safari, zoom out 3 times. Then you get a real 3.5 inch screen size on the macbook pro. It's just as unreadable as the previous iphones.

Again I've never hear one person complain about the pixel density of the old iphones. Most probably didn't even know what pixel density was.

...

Does the display look good? Yes. Will it change anything i do on my phone? No. Will i ever use video calling? No especially not on wifi only and iPhone to iPhone. To me the best part of the update is the A4 chip because pretty much everything else can be had on the 3GS. Sure the 3gs cant record the same quality of video or pictures, but lets be honest if i want good video or pictures i am not using my phone to take it, i am using a dslr or-a dedicated video camera The gyro will probably be cool also if it starts getting incorporated into games...not sure if it will though the best selling games and flight plan, angry birds etc which are all cheap and basic games, i am sure with time more complex games will come but i would still rather have physical buttons than a gyro for games.

HSUPA Support

Meanwhile, iLounge has noted that the iPhone 4 supports 3G HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access) for its uplink. iLounge cites a theoretical maximum of 5.76 Mbits/second. Meanwhile, the iPhone 3GS is limited to only 384kbps. Any faster uplink speeds will obviously help out in emailing high definition video clips over 3G networks.
5.76Mbits/second upload, is as fast if not faster than many home internet packages, so should also be sufficient for FaceTime. If the carriers ever allow it of course.

Are you trying to justify the outright pricing of the phone?

The battery icon needs sharpening, it looks terrible! So do the signal strength bars, I hope this is fixed before it's release

"Macworld's hands on also echos the sentiment::"

Seriously?

Why can't "Industry Professionals" proof-read their own damn articles?

I get that the English language is going through a metamorphosis at the moment, making everyone question to which standard we should uphold. But seriously, if I can't ****ing read it- it sucks. Stop being so goddamn busy. Read your **** before you post it.

When did reading skillz surpass writing skills? When did the role of understanding a comment become the responsibility of the receiver?

When did the writer decide that we should all **** off?
