At the risk of being off topic I wanted to share of the results with my French provider (Orange). I live in Paris, and I believe I am very close to an antenna. It is HSDPA. It is even faster than my DSL connection.

Most likely DC-HSPA+ for those speeds.
 
This is the best I seem to get at home, I used to get better. It's completely useless at work.

3G HSPA maxes out at 7.2mbps at the Link layer. Somewhere around 5mbps at the Application Layer.
In metro Atlanta, I rarely scored below 3, often 4-5mbps on old school 3G with my iPhone 4.

I've seen as high as 6.2mbit on a 7.2mbit radio, this is with iPad 2
