hey everyone! so i've seen that quite a few people have some pretty sweet external hard drives and external casings, and since i'm looking for one for myself, i thought why not get some good ideas from the pro's themselves!

They line up nicely when stacked, but the bottom of the Belkin hub doesn't quite fit inside the edges on top of the NexStar's, so it can move around when plugging cables in. I eventually took the hub and Mini off and moved them underneath my monitor.

in any case, as much as i love 'em, my old lacie 160 is plenty enough for me. enough to store my software + do a full backup of my macbook's 120.

This is my new hard disk. I bought this one because it is the best looking external hard drive I could find. 160GB, 7200rpm, aluminium cased, USB 2.0.
I'm going to be using it purely for backup of all my iTunes music and videos, movies etc.

Does anyone know where I can get a enclosure that can hold more than one HDD? In the UK if possible, if not, somewhere that will at least ship to the UK. Cheers.
Edit - Found a few. It's cheaper to build a half decent PC and use it as a headless file-server....

Witness my external hard drive, and quake in your boots.
3x300GB SATA drives in RAID5 attached to a RocketRaid 2220 pci / pci-x card from ebay. Plus a cheap gigabit ethernet card.
Soon to have a 4th 300Gb SATA drive inserted.
1TB (roughly) SATA RAID 5, webserver, media server, backup storage, video editing storage, running OS X for about £400. Plus room on the raid card for a further 4x SATA disks to take it up to 2 TB or whatever.
It feeds my main workstation, a PBG4 1.5ghz, plus a small deaf arts charity of about 4 staff, equipped with ibooks.
If I had to do it again, I'd pick a cheap Powermac G4 - installed gigabit, stronger power supply, better energy management and wake-on-lan would help a lot.

PS forgot to mention it has 1GB ram, and a 5th drive, the original 20gb ide drive, which it boots from. Oh, and a 6th drive, a DVD-RW I had lying around, with the OS restore CD living in it, in case of trouble.
Removed the modem, internal speaker, zip drive, and a few other bits and cables to make room and help internal airflow.
Most of the sata drives are mounted vertically, on their sides, in the bottom of the case, with ventilation gaps in between.
Will I manage to squeeze 10 drives in? (raid card has 8 sata ports) Who knows

If I had some money to spend i would get 2 750 gig drives so i could have a pretty sweet 1.5 TB external drive. The drive is actually sitting in my desk drawer now... drilled hole in the back of the desk for cabling and cooling... it works wonderfully.
