I had one of those, they scratch very easily. My tip would be to take off any watch/bracelet you might wear while you're using the computer.

as a student always going through transitory phases, IKEA is the next best thing to slice toast. where else can u buy everything you need in a house, from a california king size bed to swedish meat balls. and not to mention it's dirt cheap.

Except IKEA does NOT offer "California King" beds - only up to regular King.

California King is 72" by 84" long, regular king is 76" by 80" long, 4" shorter than a Cal King.

I'd actually like to have a MALM Cal King bed - but they do not make them.

What do people have against Ikea, besides the fact that it's such a huge chain of stores now?

IKEA furniture is cheaply made, particle board crap. I looks nice for a little while, but does not really last or stand up to real abuse.

It's good "starter furniture", but pales in comparison to real, well made furnishings.

You say that but I have had my Jerker for 3 years now, and there is no damage to it and I beat the crap out of this thing, It is still as strong as the day I bought it. I have had nothing but good strong, long lasting furniture from IKEA, hell I got my bed from IKEA when I was 5 and it is still just as strong, sturdy, and looks just as good as the day I got it almost 12 years ago. (I have pictures from back then that I am referring to when I say that).

Elite designers hate IKEA

"Don't look at it! Close your eyes! Move away! It's too inexpensive!!"

"I hate them! The big stupid, stupid blue place!!"

Classic! :D

Show me furniture that looks as good as IKEA that costs less.

Even cheap pine furniture costs more than IKEA, let alone decent oak or cherry. You can't buy cheap apartment-style furniture at Wal-Mart or similar for less than IKEA and it doesn't look nearly as good.

Having said that, I would not furnish my home from IKEA (as those who rent U-hauls etc.). I mainly buy accessories or decorations and plan to continue this trend

They do make some solid wood furniture. And that stuff lasts pretty well. I got a solid wood desk and it has survived several moves. I can dissassemble it into three main pieces in less than five minutes and each piece easily fits through a doorway or up stairs. A non-Ikea desk would be really hard to move.

It's good "starter furniture", but pales in comparison to real, well made furnishings.

I'll agree with you there. I bought furniture that would look decent and take a beating without falling apart or me feeling guilty for ruining nice furniture.

IKEA Dioder Lights

I want to buy a pack of the Dioder Lights. But the SHipping is just soooo expensive! Does anyone know if any Local retailers would ever sell any of these?

ALSO-- How do they attach to cabinets? A screw? Or tape? The product information on the website doesn't say anything about how it connects. And what about the controller? I am very interested in how you can control it for the 7 colors without going to a light.

AND if anyone has any, please, tell me what you think. And of what colors do they come in?

THANKS!

We just (well, a few weeks ago) finished up our living room. 95% of it is from Ikea... even though the closest one is 2 hours away. :p

Our Office is also 90% Ikea, but I don't have any shots of that handy..

Hey I drive 3 hours to the one in NJ from Albany NY, have to post pictures of our IKEA setup , absolutely gorgeous and durable as heck.

I could really spend a few thousand dollars in there, but I'd rent a decent size box truck to put everything in .

Most of my furniture is Ikea. I resized these so that they aren't huge since clicking this many timg's would be a pain.

Here is the tv stand in the living room. I really like the frosted glass sliding doors since the remotes work through it for the DVD player, etc.

Coffee table and rug. Got the coffee table in "As is" for $40, and the rug on clearance for $20.

Dining room table is a Galant desk that unfortunately doesn't match (I didn't buy it but I bought everything else in the black/brown). My mom was in an accident that left her paralyzed, so I live with her to take care of her. We went with a desk for a table because of the adjustable legs. She needs a higher table in order for her wheelchair to fit under it.
CIMG3109.jpg

This is her messy Galant desk, haha. She doesn't let me touch any of the mess, but it's really a necessary evil because she has to have all of her paperwork easily accessible since she can barely move her arms and only one hand a little, so excuse the mess.

Moving on to my bedroom. I had all light-colored hardwood furniture that was pretty nice, but very juvenile. The real killer, though, was that the dimensions of the furniture (long dresser, etc) made very inefficient use of the small space that is my room. I couldn't even have a desk, just bed, dresser, and one nightstand. The tv I had then had to be in the closet, hah.

So, a couple months ago I sold the hardwood furniture and used the money as my strict budget to replace it with Ikea furniture carefully chosen for its dimensions! Here is my tv setup that is also my dresser. I got the MALM dresser on CL for $40, and bought the BILLY bookcase new with an extra shelf. Side note: my cat broke the second candleholder from crate & barrel on the dresser a few days ago :(
CIMG3122.jpg

Now for my desk. VIKA AMON desk with VIKA CURRY legs $40 total, new. Then I put CAPITA legs on a shelf that I wasn't using that goes with the BENNO tv unit that's now in my closet. The red drawer unit is ikea, too, but I can't remember what it's called. Obviously the lights on my desk, too.

LACK shelf above my desk:

MALM Nightstands, one tall, one short. I needed the extra drawer space, and I saved a lot of money on the bed, so I went with the tall nightstand on one side. I really wanted the hopen bed, but it was too expensive and too low. The bed is actually the DALSELV solid pine frame that I stained to match. It turned out really well. Plus, I found it on CL for $40 including slats. It would've been $110 new. I also have the same rug under the foot of my bed that's in the living room.

I got the gray curtains from Ikea. Brown ones are blackout from Linens n things.

I still want to paint my room, and I need to decide where I want what on the walls, hide wires, etc. I'm so glad I have furniture that makes this space work now, though!

Here is my old furniture as a comparison:

I'll post a picture later, but wanted to comment about the quality of Ikea. You get what you pay for.

I bought a Jerker which is basically a Galant with another level shelf and that desk lasted almost 10 years. It survived numerous moves and still held up very well. The desk I bought to replace it was a cheap Mikeal which is a nice and inexpensive desk but it doesn't stack up against a Jerker. Thing is, most of their furniture that is mostly particle board unlike the Jerker which was made of both metal and PB, the all PB construction will show scuffs and looking worse for wear after bumping into it a few times.

I still buy from there though because it's relatively inexpensive and the styles are 2nd to none.

Sorry to hear about your mom.

Your set is very nice though and had I not looked at your pictures, I would have thought my space was cramped. I do wonder how you access your dresser with your bed being so close to it.

Just wanted to say although your dimensions are small, you've managed it well. You've certainly got more furniture pieces in there than what most people could fit in a space twice that size. I especially love how it's small but still have everything a person could want or need and then some.

I salute you, my friend.

Oh, last but not least but certainly most important question; how did you get your keyboard keys to go black? I love the look.

Thanks. I'm really enjoying the furniture setup. Also, originally, my bed was more centered on that wall, but I found that I could move it closer to the window, still have enough space to walk around it, and then have enough space for my mom's chair to fit between my desk and bed so that we can watch a blu-ray or whatnot together on my tv. Worked out well.

There's actually just enough space for me to stand in front of the dresser and open the drawers fully, hah.

The keyboard has an iSkin cover on it. I'm very happy with it. I picked it up at Amazon here.

Next, I plan to do some work in my mom's room. She has a small room too since it's an apt after all. Bigger than mine, though. She has soooo many clothes that she only wears half of because things fit differently in a wheelchair and ride up, etc, but she is still attached to her old clothes. She has a nice walk-in closet that is full and has a full dresser in it, plus another full dresser in her room and two nightstands. Her special bed is very long, and she has to have two bulky pieces of physical therapy equipment, too. So, I am planning on getting rid of one dresser and night stand (each dresser is the shorter, wider kind) by getting a tall MALM dresser for her closet. I've already built her an Ikea closet system for the hanging clothes that includes a tall wire drawer system (two stacked) from Ikea that gives a lot more storage space.

really nice. is that a ikea table top with 4 legs? I ask because I was going on saturday to buy a combo like that for $40. Can't be that price for a desk.

Let me know, thanks

I pretty much scoured the Ikea website and I can't seem to find a desk/table like that for $40. I understand that something like this can be built from pieces purchased from the store...can anyone link me to the components? I wanted a second desk to use for my room and something like this seems perfect! :)

I'd really like to get one of these: Poang chair in black leather

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S79805468

Unfortunately the closest IKEA is in Atlanta, bout 250 miles. If anyone has one could you do a quick review? Recommend or not. Also, does IKEA ship their goods? Seems like it comes in 2 boxes and should be UPS shipable. Thanks in advance. Cheers

Yeah it's the same desk I have in the pictures above. It's the VIKA AMON/CURRY combo.
