I've really been pretty happy!

I've really been pretty happy. It is significantly faster than my 3G was and I am getting pretty consistent results even though it is becoming a data hog...though I think it is partially because my downloads are so fast that I am surfing more in the same amount of time.

My 3G is better than my WiFi. That just sux.

Edit: photo won't load. 3G is 1500kbps. WiFi is 450kbps.

This has been a typical result for me in Springfield, MO since January, aside from the upload speed increasing with the iPhone 4's new hardware.

Why does Springfield, MO have super fast 3g? I have no idea, aside from all the college students on campus who have iPhones. It's a pretty small town of 150,000 people. Prior to the January upgrade, speeds were in the 1.5–2mbps range. They only got 3g here about a week before the iPhone 3g came out. I wasn't going to upgrade until I found that out.

Ran another speed test today outdoors, in front of my building. Got 2x the amount of download and almost 3x upload. The service inside my building - which is made of concrete mostly - is trash.

So I've run the SpeedTest app with the phone on a table, and in my hands with all the black strips covered... and I see NO difference. Which I would think means I have a very strong signal. My download is ~2000 kbps, which is better than my DSL, but my upload is consistently < 100 kbps! That's pretty awful, if I would ever try to upload photos or videos. Anyone think that could be normal? I'm in a sparsely-populated suburb in PA, so it's not like the network should be congested.

It could be that AT&T hasn't gotten around to HSUPA in your area yet.

Post Your 3G Speed While In the "Death Grip" At One Bar

This should be interesting. Post the download and upload speeds you get in an app such as Speed Test while you're in the "death grip" and have brought your iPhone reception down to one or two bars.

Speed ranged from 800mb/s dl up to the speeds in the image. Oddly, if I kept my iPhone 4 in the "death grip" long enough, the bars would go back up to five bars while still in the "death grip." So, it may very well be a software problem that Apple can fix.
