Since iOS 10 includes the ability to capture photos in raw DNG format, post them here!

The only app I know that will do this however is Adobe Lightroom. Apple's camera app doesn't have the capability and there isn't an option to turn it on.

You should be able to import a DNG raw file from an external camera into the camera role and let Lr import it. Of course not many cameras do DNG as their native raw format.

It will be a few days before my 7+ arrives and I can try the use of DNG.

Here's one example (iPhone 6s+, DNG opened in Photoshop CC).
The DNG is so much better, it's not even funny anymore. Solves so many issues. DR at base ISO 25 is surprisingly respectable, somewhere around 10-11 EV.

APPs like ProPhoto already allowed for uncompressed TIFF files to be captured so not sure what all the hub bub is about over DNG file capture (since DNG itself is based on the TIFF standard).

My default workflow in LR automatically asks me if I want to edit the original or a copy so while I defintely welcome the addition of DNG it's only a marginal revolution for me. I saw some mention of larger color gamuts APIs which is of more interest in my opinion - know anything about that?
 
DCI-P3 is supported. It not exactly the same as AdobeRGB but roughly about the same amount larger than sRGB. iPhone 7, the 9" iPad Pro, and newer iMacs do P3 as default color space.
 
I'm still using aperture, so will aperture import the image from a iOS 10 device as RAW or jpeg?

My iPhone 7+ comes next week.
 
First you need a camera app that will retrieve and use the raw DNG file. The standard camera app does not do that. The Lightroom Mobile camera is one that will do that. To get Lightroom Mobile you have to have an Adobe CC subscription for photography (Lightroom, Photoshop, Lr Mobile) or other CC subscription that includes those apps.


Evidently there are other camera apps coming that can do it.

As for still using Aperture.......seriously? :eek:
 
Lightroom Mobile does the best job with iPhone camera DNGs. It's the only one that keeps the GPS data, for instance. And very easy to get it to a raw-capable app or application, i.e. Lr.

Snapseed will do RAW, and can handle the iPhone DNGs, but it didn't take RAW/DNG photos; I had to use Manual instead.

The Manual app will also take DNGs, as will either (or both) Pro Camera and/or Pro Cam (I get 'em confused). Obscura does DNGs too. So already a bunch of apps generate RAW.

And it's great. You can definitely pull out more from shadows, do WB with a gray card, create a custom camera profile with a color card, etc; all the great benefits of RAW. And it also avoids Apple's RAW processing, if you don't like that. Several have mentioned that they like taking images without the heavy denoising Apple does.

For some reason, BTW, DxO Optics Pro won't open the iPhone DNGs. Even after I "converted" them to DNG in Lr. Affinity, Macphun, and FastRawViewer all have no problem with them.

Haven't seen any lens correction profiles in Lr yet.
 
This is a painting I made quite a few years ago. Just something dumb and abstract. These are the results from taking several pics. You can tell by the name whether it was LR, ProCam or stock camera

Has DXO updated the iPhone RAW yet? If not that could be why.

That's fantastic - I see that DCI-P3 is just over half the visual spectrum. I wonder how long it will take them to get to Rec.2020 and beyond...
 
The best HDR post processing app I have used is Aurora from Macphun. They should be releasing the new version between now and end of October.

Question for you since you appear to be the LR master here. The photography plan comes with 2GB of Adobe Cloud storage. Does syncing collections between LR on Mac and LR Mobile count toward the 2GB limit?
 
Yes. LR makes jpeg preview files that are sent from the desktop to the cloud. Then Lr Mobile on your iPhone or iPad can retrieve a copy to show a collection of jpg images. I have around 900 images in my shared collections that only take up around 3% of my allocated space. All of that capability comes with the CC photography subscription.
 
Photo from this morning, out of Lightroom. I love the ability to control highlights and shadows. Basically Apple should put an Option there to automatically "light" highlights and shadows adjustments automatically to every jpg.

Of course, this isn't me. But...


The sub head ("A DLSR Killer?") is total clickbait-- but the video probably will be informative for you iphone shooters. (Of course he shoots RAW; that's his schtick).
