You get get the spaces by using Black Dock Separators. They are basically just apps that do nothing, with no name nor icon which sit in your dock giving the appearance of spaces. They're good for keeping your dock clean and sorted.

hah hah classic. I like the screen shots. I mean we post stupid ass screen shots for everything else and even Leopard unboxing photos...why not this?!

I don't know why some people think the menu bar and dock are so bad, I think they both look great :) Also having two dock options is nice.
