The West coast is not AT&T's strong point.

how true. i'm in orange county and i get 4-5 bars at my work in foothill ranch and on the 5 freeway but in my home in tustin i get no service. :(
i only use 3g for surfing the web and navigation though so it's not a big deal....yet.

Boston, MA

Outside near Boston Common (work): 4-5 bars

I live 5 minutes south of San Francisco. I have 0 3G bars. I'm on 2-3 EDGE bars all the time. My home is a dead spot for AT&T service.

im hoping this hasnt been posted before, but this reception thing is doing my head in so wanted to see what other people are getting -

Im in the UK - Near manchester, in macclesfield 0 bars NO 3G!!

going home to Marple, near manchester, 1-3 bars 3G, non consistent (drops off all the time)

Lets see what other people get, and if you are close to another person it might narrow down whether its the chip set issue or just bad coverage.

mid-wales, UK - according to O2 should be excellent, saturated 3G coverage - actually get less than 1 bar and it times out when I try to load a web page!

Aberystwyth (no, it's not a rude word all those Stateside!!) .. university town which is why I think we got 3G at all but it's sposed to be so good here that the O2 person I was complaining to told me that it should be easier for me to get a strong 3G signal than strong Edge here! .. it's been worse than opposite in reality!

anyone in central jersey, around the Hamilton/Trenton area? I'm hoping switch over to ATT sometime next week, just wondering if anyone had really poor reception around here. My cousins little flipphone had full 3g service, so I'm hoping the iphone 3g performs just as good. any input?

Chester, NY (70 miles North of NYC)

No 3G - have to keep it turned off or I lose calls every few minutes.

In my house, 1 - 3 bars depending where I'm at. Around the farm 1 - 3 bars.

Driving down the I-87 full bars to 1 bar to dropped calls every 5 minutes.

UGH!

Location: Victoria, BC
3G reception: 4-5 Bars at home (1.7-2.1Mbps data) and in traffic on the way home.
2-3 bars reception at work (0.8-1.3Mbps data).
Provider: Fido

Ft. Lauderdale, FL

I find both the reception and speeds to fluctuate wildy thoughout the day. One moment, I'll have 1 bar, the next, 4-5, yet neither I or the phone moved an inch, must be slight movement of the huge flying saucer hovering between me and my closest 3G tower. :)

One speed test I'll get like 200K, the next, 1500K, and everything inbetween, and, the download speeds seem to have very little to do with how many bars I have, I can get 1500K on one bar, and 300 K on 4-5, overall I get OK coverage and speeds, but it should be way more consistant. Prior to 2.0.1 I never once had my phone switch to Edge, since updating, it has switched a bunch of times.

I feel in my gut a big part of the issue in my area is not enough bandwidth to go around, and during the day, you have times when too many people are using 3G and the speeds get very slow, then late at night, they get really fast again, seems to me if ATT increases coverage and bandwidth, it might help, even if the phone is, shall we say, "3G challenged" :)

Just did a couple speed tests and overall not sounding great compared to other's numbers
wifi (comcast cable with a g router at the far end of the house) 890kbps (2.1mbps on the MBP from the same place)
tried the wifi from the same room as the router and couldn't get over 700kbps - so distance didn't seem to be much of an issue

Edge (4-5 bars) 178kbps

3G (1 bar) 433kbps
3G (2 bars) 187kbps-402kbps - the range from multiple tries, yeah less than the 1 bar of service
and last time I tried it, 3G started with 2 bars, at beginning of test dropped to 1, then up to 5, and got a result of 174kbps

so not so sure I trust the 5 bar meter much related to data speeds
