I bought my 3GS on launch last year, and I'm eligible for an upgrade.

"As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee."

I'm in the same boat as this guy and I believe one other person who posted early on. I upgraded to a 3GS on the 4th of July weekend a year ago. AT&T is saying I can upgrade...hmm...Wonder if it's a mistake and if so, if they'll catch it when I go to buy.

how much is your monthly bill before taxes?

Bought my 3GS in december of 09. win

Any idea why some people need to pay the $18 upgrade fee and others don't?

I got my iPhone 3G in 7/08 and mine is waived.

My girlfriend (who is also on my account) got hers in 10/08 and hers is not waived.

My sister (who is not on my account) got hers in 12/08 yet hers is waived.

It doesn't make sense to me. At least we are all eligible for the full discount though. -_-

Not sure, I can't log on to my account at the moment. But I have the least amount of minutes you can get (450?) and the data plan obviously. Oh, and I pay $5 for 200 texts. But I'm the only line on the account - no family lines, etc. If I qualify based on that then everyone would.

I do have the $30/month iPad data plan...but I thought the 2 weren't connected.

My wife and I both have iPhones on the AT&T family plan. I qualify for the 32GB iPHone 4 at $299. She has to pay $499 unless she waits until February 2011 -- because her phone is secondary. I confirmed this not only online but by talking with a rep.

Trust me. She won't be happy to wait until February.

We plan to sell our 3GS phones either on eBay or to Gazelle.com (a company that buys used iPhones). That will likely recover all but $200 of the upgrade cost.

Lastly, the rep said that it doesn't matter if you upgrade through AT&T or Apple, your unlimited data plan gets grandfathered in.

I was eligible and had to pay the $18 upgrade fee, bought a 3GS on 5/16/10, returned it yesterday. Now that my upgrade has been restored it now says they will waive the upgrade fee. Weird.

Did an early upgrade for the 3gs...bought my dad and I one. My gf was also added to the family plan this year replacing my brother's line. She bought a lg xenon and a month ago traded her phone to get one my mom wanted from CL. She is using the old iPhone and when I had put her on the iPhone plan...the AT&T csr had put it as the $30 plan instead of the $20. I found out later when I was trying to get VVM working and the csr told me if I switched to the $20 plan, then I would not be eligble for the unlimited plan anymore. So I decided vvm can be lived without until the ip and that unlimited is worth the extra dollars.

All three of the iPhone lines (2 3gs bought on release day and a 2g) all have the same message for an early upgrade. I wasn't expecting my gf's line to be early upgrade but hey we'll be glad to take it!

I purchased my 3GS from Apple on launch day last year and I am eligible for the 199/299 pricing and they will waive the upgrade fee

I was surprised that my upgrade fee was waived.
<edit wrong image>

That is what my message says, but when I looked online though my account, it was different. Under Iphone upgrade, it still had it being charged to me. However, there was another thing there above stating that they will waive the fee and give me an additional $50 off on a headset. However, it did not include the iPhone. Therefore, I am not sure if this message applies to the iPhone.

WHOA!!

today I was curious and did the 639 thingy and i get

"As a valued customer we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2 year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee"

a week ago I was getting the we can offer you a partial upgrade deal.

This is very cool because now I dont have to worry of losing my unlimited data plan when switching my current number to the new phone.

It also takes away the issue of having to add a line through Radio Shack or whomever else. I still think I will pre order with The Shack due to it being a quarter mile from my home.

They have always been doing this. When you sign up, you are charged a $36 activation fee and when you upgrade, you are charged $18.
I understand the initial activation fee, but how is buying a new phone an upgrade? It's the same freaking phone, only the newest version. Is the $18 for letting us out of our old contract 6 months early? And if it was, it still doesn't make it an upgrade because we have to sign a new 2 year contract.

Why do some of us get the upgrade fee waived and others do not? I guess they feel THAT bad for me for having an 8GB 3G ;)

They are not letting you out early. You are cancelling your current agreement and signing a new one. Therefore, it will be longer.

You are upgrading (or changing) your phone to a different one. They charge you a fee. It has always been like this. When you upgrade, that phone carries a new agreement to which you agree to.
