Post your vinyl collection, and the 'best of'/rarest stuff you've got!

I'll start with one of my favourite albums I've got on vinyl...

I absolutely love this on vinyl, it really sounds very very different to the CD version, and the embossed design on 'Magic Window' is a breathtakingly beautiful to hold.

so my dad brought out his prostar record player. since then i have bought a few albums that i really liked. they sound much better than any other format..

this one I really like, Tiger Army's latest. came in limited red vinyl...

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (one copy still in original shrinkwrap)
entire Beatles discography
Led Zeppelin I-IV (one copy of IV still in original shrinkwrap)

Speaking of Miles and vinyl, I found a sealed copy of Get Up With It in New York last week!

Also picked up Scott 4 by Scott Walker (looks like a reissue to me: also sealed packaging and pressed on nice, thick vinyl), and one of my friends gave me a "spare" copy of Rhythms, Resolutions and Clusters by Tortoise -- by all means a prettty uncommon slab of vinyl. So three pretty special records in one trip. Not bad.

I've got to get that Arcade Fire on vinyl! Along similar lines is OK Computer by Radiohead: the mastering on vinyl is about 500% better than the CD.

I have over 200, specialty discs in my collection, (I have over 1000 pieces total, and my father has another 1500 - 1700, of prime stuff from the 50's up).
It will take me a day or two. The Iron Maiden collection alone is 40, or so & I stopped collecting around Fear of the dark.

I have a few hundred pieces of vinyl. Mostly 12 inch singles from the late 80's,(and I am ready to trade/sell them). I have a few that are color presses;, purple, blue, pink, red. I don't have any pics yet, but I am working on taking a few shots of some of the best.

I don't have any vinyl, but my dad had a whole chest of hundreds and hundreds of records that sat there for a good decade. Two years ago he decided to stop wasting space and throw out all of the records but one rare/special Beatles one he had. Then he took all of the covers and covered our garage walls with them. It looks actually looks really cool.

I have a whole closet full. Probably at least 100. I haven't listened to a lot of them in a while. But I still listen to a few. Vinyl sounds so good.

Another highlight of my record collection is a first press of Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Night & The Pips. I can't find it anywhere though, I've got loads of cases of vinyl I haven't even looked at yet!

ive got around 1,000 lp's and 12 inches and approx 200 7 inches, a few of my favourites..
the pink floyd '97 vinyl collection

discontinued in '97 pressed on 180gramme vinyl, except for the earlier pressings, which were mispressed on 130 gramme vinyl. bit rarer, but don't sound any different. mines the 130 gramme set
the specials live at the moonlight club

white label bootleg recorded in 1979 apparently quite sought after by specials fans.
the wailers catch a fire

my dad worked for island records in the seventies and would come home with stacks of vinyl according to my mum. most of it got binned unfortunately, but this survived in really good condition, and ive now got it
the zippo covered first pressing are again quite rare by all accounts..
sounds great with a few cold beers after a long hard day

Not as much as you'd think. I can't afford their prices. Most of my new vinyl purchases come from gigs or StonerRock.com. Having stuff shipped from Idaho is still cheaper than Diverse...

When my mom was a kid (late '50s or early 60's) her neighbor used to have a job re-filling jukeboxes (he may have sold/leased them too). Apparently, the jukeboxes had to be refilled every so often due to the wear and tear on the records as well as to add new music. So, he would let my mom go through and pick out any of the used records she wanted. I don't remember if she had to pay for them. Anyways she had a huge collection of the smaller jukebox size records (45's??). I don't have any photos and she sold them a few years ago, but my favorite was "The Royal Guardsmen - Snoopy vs the Red Baron".

I only ever bought 1 record myself, the first music recording I ever owned: "Ghostbusters - Original Soundtrack Album". My favorite song was: "Laura Branigan - Hot Night" which if I remember correctly was the first song on the B side.

I don't have the record any more (garage sale), but I might still have my old record player in storage. It was like a little suitcase covered with a blue jean wallpaper-like material. I think we bought it at a Thrifty drug store.

i think i have about 1300 records? Im not sure anymore... genres include dubstep, drum & bass, breaks, uk hardcore. i have tons of rare & hard to find stuff, but im too lazy to dig thru the crates right now!

The chain required to listen to vinyl:

- turntable
- phono preamp
- preamp/power amp or integrated amp
- speakers

The phono preamp is critical. The level of sound that comes off a vinyl disc is much lower than typical 'line level' sources such as CD players. In addition, a special equalisation curve is applied to all vinyl and the phono preamp is necessary to apply this.

Older receivers and integrated amps typically came with a 'PHONO' input - this input has the phono preamp onboard. In this digital home theater age, the majority of products no longer have the PHONO input. In which case, you must purchase a phono preamp, which can then plug into any of the analog inputs on your receiver or amp (ie. AUX or some such).

If you're looking to do it on the cheap, phono preamps are available for around $50. If you want something better, both in terms of phono preamps and turntables, try to find a specialist audio store in your area.

For superb phono preamps, check out brands such as NAD, Cambridge Audio, Creek. For some of the best, most affordable, true hi-fi turntables, look no further than Rega, though Pro-Ject also gets good reviews.
