As an old school gamer I've never really gotten into the online social gaming thing. I tried out one of these things, I believe it was second life, and it seemed like just a bunch of people's avatars walking around. What's the point? I must be missing something.

I was always a big rpg and action-adventure game fan, and I just don't see how the experience is enhanced by having other real people play characters in the game world along side me. To me, if I'm playing a game it's because I want to play a game, and if I want to socialize I call my friends or go onto forums to directly talk about stuff. It's seems like combining the activities of video gaming and socializing is the worst of both worlds.

What am I missing?

p.s. I hope I'm not thread-jacking too much.

First of all, I wouldn't base your opinions of MMO's on second life since it's really just a visual version of something like myspace or facebook, nothing like WoW.

It's a hard question to answer though. The game never forces you to co operate with other real life players and indeed it is still a fantastic game to play completely solo. WoW isn't really about socialising as you seem to think, although its always fun to meet up with friends in game and quest together, its more about enhancing the games experience with the aid of other people rather than meeting up for a laugh and catching up.

It's hard for me to articulate my point but you could always try the two week free trial that Blizzard do and make your own mind up? Although you wont have anywhere near the full WoW experience in just two weeks (with a level cap of 20)

there are also a couple of free MMORPGs you can try such as

Mabinogi

and

Perfect World

Mabinogi has a full story you can play, it used to be pay only but they opened up the whole first part for free users, and hopefully they will do the same for the other parts, Perfect World i havent played yet, it looks more interesting than mabinogi...but ive heard its not as good.

I actually play mabinogi every night for a few hours for the past few weeks, ive really gotten into it and its quite entertaining.

I'll agree that the game isn't meant to be a social network. But I will say that it's a big aspect of it. The reason why it's an online game is so that you can interact with other people, and like you said to keep progressing. And a lot of people aren't hardcore raiders; they like to get online and meet up with friends and have some fun. PvP is totally socially interactive, but again, I'll agree that you don't just sit around and catch up on things, but while on Vent or w/e, it isn't always just game talk.

If you're into killing **** and running around doing random tasks to get gold and new items, then this game is pretty fun. It's awesome to be in a top raiding guild with a bunch of other people that want to see new content and get new gear. Within a month (after obtaining the highest level, 80 now) you'll be decked out and have fun ganking the other faction. Or at least that's what I did :)
