Potential MacBook Air Update Delayed Due to Chip Shortage?

YAY!!! A non-tablet related rumor!:D

I can't wait for the 27th to come and go so that people can start talking about computers again:apple:

But yeah more on topic, I really don't see the MBA as being a top priority for apple so I don't think they'll be too concerned about this. Hopefully it won't stop them from updating the MBPs

Just a hunch

This is just a hunch but for the last few weeks I've been thinking that Apple is doing away with the Air in favor of this new Tablet. I think they will announce the Air's demise at next week's showing of the Tablet. Either that or they are revising the Air to be a Tablet. The Air has been sort of a failure.

Sorry it's been said already, I guess I'm not the only one that thinks this. I'm sure many others have this theory as well.

Am i the only one who see chip supply shortages and gets flashbacks to the old G4 days and fights the urge to run screaming into the night "Nooooo! It's so beautiful and fast. I must have it, but it's never coming..."

/though of course there is always going back to a PPC chip.

The Air has been sort of a failure.

Do we have any demonstrable proof that the air is "sort of a failure?"

Just because it isn't as popular as the 13" Pro does not mean the Air is a failure.

Anecdotally, I see plenty of them around.

lol,

dont know about where you got your information, but i sell air's the most.

they outsell the macbook pro's 2 to 1(in my shop), especially at the price point now.

they air is not going anywhere, if anything, the pro's will begin to look like them soon.

the tablet will never phase it out, its not usable as a computer, its made to be for multimedia, books , internet.

the i/o will be limited.

Does the keynote usually have a length of time, or end time mentioned?
What's to stop Apple just going great guns for a bit longer - they do have the world's press enthralled - couldn't one say this might be an ideal opportunity to talk about refreshed products also, even in passing?

I really can't see what justifies the purchase of the Air right now. Maybe it's because it's 1.5 pounds lighter than the base MacBook Pro and Macbook, but is that really that great of a trade off considering everything else you are losing in the process?

If you have schlepped as I did a first generation MBP around the globe and to scientific meetings it is a big issue. I usually make all presentations on keynote (which requires me to bring my Mac) but recently decided to do it via PC and PP (argh) simply because I didn't want to shlep my Mac to the meeting and than all day around. And for the heavy duty work I have this nice MacPro with 2x 2.93 GhZ Xeon and 12G of Ram. Gives me the power of 16 processors. Don't need much more than that except for a very light laptop, aka MBA with specs reasonably up to date.

This is actually a positive rumor as it is the first indicating maybe an update for the MBA. For someone who has already waited for more than a year (2g and 128 MB HD are just not cutting it, I have that in my almost 5 year old MBP - actually better, it has a 320 MB HD now) waiting few more weeks is actually positive as there is light at the end of the tunnel (hopefully NOT the train).

I really want an air for on-the-go, although I do not really need it. (But in the end - what do I need...)
4 GB Ram and 256 SSD and I'm in as well.
Please, no glassy display.

Oh, and I say yes to keyboard-based input!

That could be a double-edged sword. You have the media's attention, yes. If you cram too much into one press event, much of what you announce would be lost in the shuffle. You could announce some great changes to several products, but it would be tremendously overshadowed by the Tablet announcement (especially if they also talk about iPhone 4.0 OS).

Oh said:
Thats exactly why I don't see the tablet phasing out the MBA - or why I hope its not. I don't want to sit in a hotel with this deadline coming up (hi NIH) and write on a giant iPhone... Unless they have something better up their sleeves...

Really now? I frequent coffee houses weekly and I've seen maybe one MBA within the last 4 months. I see a MBP, especially the Unibody everyday. I had an Air, I tried my best to make it my full time daily computer, too limited for what you pay for. If you feel it's worth every penny, by all means, buy 100 of them.
Out of all the Air's you claim to have sold can you honestly say you see many people out in the public with one every week? Probably not.

As someone who has several MacBooks and a MB Air and who travels quite a bit (as well as carting the computer from home to office), the Air is really nice to carry around. I bought the initial air mainly because I'm a self admitted gadget geek but very quickly became enamored with the weight loss on my shoulder. As the Air got "longer in the tooth" and I put more animations into my presentations, the Air couldn't keep up and I found myself moving towards the first unibody MB and just dealing with the weight. Lately however, I've been gravitating back to the Air for some uses.

As someone else said, new processor and 4 gig of RAM and I'll consider upgrading. If you're not someone who travels a lot, the weight isn't a big deal and you're better of with the MB Pro of your preference.

I did say it was just a hunch. Make sure you read my entire post before accusing me of posting misinformation. :p
