Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous to get the 30" and the MBP. What's wrong with just the Macbook? It's more portable. I would get the 23" ACD (or dell) and a MB. You'll be just as happy with it. Most websites require only like a 17" screen to be viewed without any horizontal scrolling. If you dont need portability, get a 24" iMac. It's cheaper, and you can save the money for a later time. However, if I was very rich, and had a lot of money, I would buy two 30" ACDs, etc...lol.

Seems that we have a case of what could very well be a spoiled high school student here.

Either way, you have no need on something so you can have "a lot of tabs open" in Safari. I have a MacBook, and I have four tabs open right now, and I could have fifteen, twenty, or twenty-five open if I really wanted, and it runs just as fine as your whole "awesome setup" would.

If you want a large screen, get a 24-inch iMac. If you need a laptop that badly (and no high school student does, though college can be another story), get a MacBook, or a MacBook Pro, if you feel like having something expensive and unnecessary for what you want to do with it.

I'm in High School, and I have a G4 tower with a 17" display (paid myself), with a 22" widescreen display coming soon (will also be paid for myself). I also have a Thinkpad (selling) and a TiBook 500 (just came in this weekend).

This setup is above and beyond most familys' setups, never mind a high school student, and let me tell you: There's no HS aged task that can slow my setup. A MBP is an amazing machine, but think clearly of your priorities that come with your age. I have to think about a Car, Insurance and Gas soon, as well as an AP exam and other expenses. My setup I have cost me about $900 total (G4 tower, current 17" and TiBook + Thinkpad) and I can handle any task. Windows? why get an intel mac when I have a perfectly fine Thinkpad? Movie editing? Thats the G4's specialty. Portability? TiBook or Thinkpad are perfectly fine for the road, with the TiBook's battery lasting longer of course.

I'm pretty confident all of my machines can handle Browser Tabs up the wahoo, for about 3 grand less than your setup. Even though your setup is future-proof (G4's are aging and so is the Pentium III in the T23), I think you should wait on such a huge purchase. Besides being very expensive, you dont want your machines being a year or two old when you get to college. The displays will be bigger and brighter, and the Macbooks faster and shinier. Most studios have to second-guess purchasing a setup like that, let alone a HS student. And with the lack of Pro Apps being used; why not spring for a cheap G4 or something like that tiill college? That way you could even take it to school without as much fear of it getting robbed, and you'd still have all the productivity of the MBP sans the Intel capabilities.

Believe me, when the novelty of the new machines wears off, and after all your friends have seen it and gawked at the 30" ACD, you'll begin to think you paid a little too much.

my $.02

Keep in mind that if you are using this in college, your monitor is going to get trashed by roommates, any friends they have over, and the random party guest. If you really want one, look at the 23"...save some of your money to get the 30" (or larger) once the party days of college are over.

i'm in agreement with everyone else here, this is a bit excessive. ok, a lot excessive...

another thought- you may have space for your setup now, but i can almost guarantee you if you're living in a dorm room things are going to get cramped real quick with a 30" display, if you'll even be able to fit it. i've got a 20" imac in my dorm right now and i can't imagine having anything much bigger than this.

I was just going to make this point. I'm living in a dorm as a sophmore and (thanks to Katrina) have lived in three different rooms on two campuses and seen my friend's room in different buildings, etc- and in none of those rooms would there have been an easy way to fit in a 30" screen on the desk. A lot of desks come with built-in hutches that are about 6-8" deep- the 15" screen on my PB fits nicely, but there's no way a 30" would. Even a 20" iMac could be a stretch in some rooms.

If the screen really will be an "investment" wait until you get to college and choose one that will comfortably fit into your room. Screens will be better then- and you won't lose out on 2-3 years of using the ACD becuase you don't have enough space.

There's really only a couple things I need to say (and I haven't read his other threads):

1) My Dell (yes Dell, but I didn't know how great Macs were back then!) 15" screen can fit two browser windows side by side without needing to horizontal-scroll any websites, so a 30" ACD is useless. If you want an ACD that much, get at most the 23".

My second point, and more important point:
2) You better be spending your own money.

A Macbook Pro and 30'' ACD for web surfing and listening to music?

Sounds like somebody is trying to compensate for something...

Seriously, unless you're going to be working as a full-time media professional, you don't need that setup. Especially as a high school student.

Get a regular Macbook and then maybe a 20'' ACD if you want an external monitor so much.
