I don’t need fast charging the vast majority of the time. That said: would it be OK to use the new 20 Watt charger (I got with my iPad Air M3, 11”) to charge my iPhone 17 (Pro Max)?

Conversely, any problem using the 40 watt charger (came with the iPhone 17) on my iPad (Air 3M)?

Thanks!

Yes you can alternate between your 20w and 40w charger between them absolutely no problem. Obviously the 40w charger will be faster, but produce more heat (more heat=battery degradation if used all the time). 20w for me personally is a good balance.

As long as it’s a charger from a reputable company, you can use any charger you like. Your 17PM controls the amount of electricity going into the phone, not the charger. You can use a 96W charger, no problem.

17 series only fast charge to 50% so any extra heat generated doesn’t last past that. Unless you have your phone in a very thick case without proper ventilation, the differences would be negligible.

Both are Apple chargers shipped with their “parent” devices:
40 W - iPhone 17 PM
20 W - iPad Air M3

Since I use the iPad much more than the iPhone, I want to use the 40 W charger with it and the 20 W charger with the phone.

Thank you for the info.

Absolutely, this is exactly what I would do.

You guys in the US get a 40w charger with the 17PM! That is something unheard of in the UK and Europe LOL.

OP - it doesn't really matter as most modern chargers with safety ratings will "negotiate" power.

Active negotiation is one of the fundamental elements of the PD spec.

The presence, or absence, of safety marks should also not be conflated with how the spec is designed to function.

There are plenty of power adapters that lack safety marks, yet still function as PD devices, albeit unvetted by a NRTL, or the USB IF.

I still use the Apple brand 12 watt wall charger! Was at the Apple store and looking at a 96W Apple brand charger for like $100 and a stranger came up and told me not to buy it and suggestE going to Amazon buy a knock off!
