I was attempting to replace the hard drive in my eMac, but for instructions I HAD to follow some darn take-apart guide that said pull out the connection for the power button cord from the logic board. I didn't know that it was SOLDERED in there, and now I can't complete putting my eMac back together without doing so.

Can this be fixed without having to send it to Apple? Does it HAVE to inolve soldering, or is there an alternative? Is there a way I can temporary have my eMac power on until I get the connector fixed?

Which eMac - there are at least 3 variations on them.

I broke my power button when I did not disconnect it - but I could hot wire the Mac for awhile. If you can jumper the pads once to get it booted, change the settings for automatically restart after a power failure and maybe you live with it like that.

This is the 2004 eMac, with the USB 2.0 ports.

I could try the hot-wiring, but that could be risky.

Tried hot-wiring, it didn't work. I'm taking it to my college campus with me tomorrow to see if the computer or audio/visual staff there can help, or at least a person with experience working with electronics and a soldering iron..

I have the USB 1.0 with ATI graphics - so I know nothing about the later eMacs.

See if those a/v people know anything about hot air soldering. No bs, it's recent technology, and a lot less damaging to sensitive components and sheathing. I pulled a soldered joint off a digital camera circuit board, and guy I know resoldered it with a hot air gun. All good.

Any TV repair shops in the area? sounds like something they could tackle.

Electrical Engineering department on campus?
