Just as a talking point and hopefully such a discussion will yield some insights for those who are still contemplating to take this route.
p.s. How do I resize the large image? It makes things difficult to read, though it may be beneficial to some, especially for the visually challenged.

Using this as a reference upgrade path
G4 2GHz Upgrade (399.99 USD)
note: You may like to discuss the merits of the dual cpu upgrade if you wish.

Most of us know it isn't of good value to get a brand new upgrade CPU for most of our older systems. Kindly point out the merits of still choosing such a path as compared to purchasing a new low end mac. How convincing with these merits be? e.g. will it still be sufficient to sway one towards such upgrade paths? One may speak of specific specialized apps or in general.

Note the 2nd benchmark (scroll down) since the current generation of mac minis and iMacs have since improved.

Here're some benchmarks courtesy of macsales.

For what it's worth, a non-technical comparison is that the (Sonnet) G4 Dual 1.8GHz upgrade is LOUD. Louder than the well known jet-engine MDD G4s. Unacceptably loud when compared to a silent Mac Mini.
