occasionally I get there is no OS error when starting the PMC. I have both OS 9 and Tiger on it so it happens to both. Is the Hard Drive going bad or the cables? I don't have any spares of anything to actually check but what's the most common reason?

My understanding is the the G3 is tempermental. I've not experienced that with my own G3, but I only run one OS and it's usually just running in the background 24/7.

The cables are standard IDE cables. You could take one out of an old PC and it would work in the G3.

Ok then if I ever get some more cables ( i use to have a bunch) I try it but now it seems to be working.

why is it more temperamental than the others? G or no G series.

@LightBulbFun, maybe you can explain…?

it generally depends on if you have a Rev A G3 BW or a Rev B G3 BW

the Rev A's are known for being generally quite temperamental and their main ATA controller has known bugs/issues

I think the Rev B's are much more robust, but I have no personal experience with them sadly

(unfortunately all my G3 BW's happen to be Rev A's LOL)

It looks like I have A or at least it shows A by the numbers under the copyright. I wish I kept my first B&W I think that may have been a B since I sorta remember there were less or non existent problems with it :(

I haven't had any big issues with my Rev A yet but I decided to go for a sata PCI card and flash it in hopes of avoiding ATA trouble in OSX. Apparently you can't run OS9 on most PCI cards because of 4mb chip limitations if I remember correctly. The flashing has appeared to work but I haven't spent a afternoon installing 10.4 so I don't have personal experience on how good/bad it is yet. Here is the resources I used:
