Hello, I just inherited a power mac g4 and it seems like I cannot download much "free ware" (ex. Gimp, Openoffice) any ideas on anything this computer can get thats good?

any recommendations on a USB type wireless LAN adaptors?

I had a very early Power Mac G4 and for older stuff like that, I often refer to www.apple-history.com which will give you RAM limits, OS limits, and other useful information such as original, unaltered release specs.

Amazingly, this machine came with OS 9, but had I kept it long enough, it could have taken all the way up to OS X 10.4.11.

From that point after you know the parameters of your specific Power Mac, you can go to a used Apple enthusiast site (sun remarketing, low end mac, or similar site) and see if you have the latest upgrades possible if you feel you want to modernize your older machine to its full potential.

why not?www.opensourcemac.org has everything you need 😉
USB Type WIFI adaptors:
branded: SMC: model SMCUSBS-n3 150mbps N card,it has a ralink chip with drivers for macOS X
unbranded: something like this ,or you can search for ralink in the description,and then check in ralink webpage if it has drivers for osx.

There are PCI Solutions too,like this one,or this combo:1+2 wich will work as a real aiport card,although,you don't get "N" speeds.

What specific PowerMac G4 do you happen to have?
