Upgraded mine from 8gb to 12gb just because I had some sticks lying around that fitted - flat zero difference which I expected..

Yes, I have seen someone put in more than 16GB in a G5 Quad and while it does show up as 32GB in system profiler, only 16GB are showing as active.. so, in essence, its a waste of money to try and get 16GB more out of the machine when the memory controller itself can't support it.

The Mac Pro is another story since its Intel architecture and Intel puts in surprises with their chipset which will allow support past the maximum memory at the time.

Its a damn shame.. I wish the Quad could support 32GB.

I only have 8 GB, but I will be updating, and will try to add a 4GB stick in with new 3 new 2GB sticks.
If it fails, will it not boot, or will it boot but accept only half of the 4GB stick?
Has anyone ever tried to use more than 16GB of ram in a Quad?

It is most likely a firmware limitation. The IBM specs for the northbridge state that it can handle 64GB of RAM.

Or could it be a 32 bit kernel limit?

Yes, it could be a firmware limitation just like the G4's according to specs at Freescale state the G4 can go up to 4GB of memory.. But like anything else when Apple touches firmware, it cripples it.

So, while the G5's northbridge can handle higher than 16GB, Apple goes ahead and limits it.

But 2006 Mac Pros have no problem going beyond what Apple deems is the maximum memory of 16GB.

Arn't we forgetting that the quads really would not be able to utilize all that much ram so even if you could the very primitive g5 and its total of 10ghz (keeping in mind that I have seen i3s have more than 10ghz at 5ghz no problem with liquid cooling) combined with that fact that most programs can't even utilize quad cores from that time much less getting any sort of benefit from having that much ram

Out of curiosity...

How fast is the PowerMac G5 Quad Core?

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/specs/powermac_g5_quad_2.5.html

I mean I read the specs and it looks like it is still a beast, at least for me (Up to 16 GB of RAM OMG :eek:).

However since it is a 2005-06 technology, and since I bet some here still have one, I wonder how fast is it, and compared to what :)

I did quite a few benchmarks when I had a Quad G5.
See this old thread. At the time for the applications I tested, the Quad G5 was faster than the 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo in my 2010 13" Macbook Pro.

Great machine and lasted quite a while. It was handily beaten by my Macbook Pro 15" Core i7 2.66Ghz though.

Your world is like 23 light years from Earth, my friend :)

Just kidding.. You are the man. You are so cool with your knowledge of tech.

It does in my world :D

its like if you take 1 variable and you are off by 5 and you compare it to other variables off by the same amount and you subtract that

you then get an accurate assessment still
