I picked up one of the cheapo 40 pin CF-IDE adapters on amazon. Unfortunately it's too tall to fit in my PM G3 Beige once I swing the chassis back down...so I'll get the male version that plugs in the end of the IDE HD cable instead. Do I have to connect the 4 pin power connector on the adapter to make it work? I would think a CF card would run on whatever power an IDE port can provide. This machine doesn't have a bunch of extra power cables.

Hard to tell without seeing the specific unit, but the one "male" I have has 2 jumpers, one for master/slave the other for power source with instructions printed on the PCB.

Never tried the power over IDE option so it may or may not work.

The 40-pin PATA data connector has no power pins. You will need to provide auxiliary power from somewhere.

Elaboration: Pin 20 (the key pin, usually missing) could be populated with VCC, though this is nonstandard and likely only present in industrial hardware.

A lot of them happen to work with no extra power, but it's getting it from data pins. This is not really "correct" and they should technically be powered with a dedicated wire.

After having a second look at the storage "section" of the computer case, there is a spare 4 pin connector usually used for small drive power, so I should be good there. Just need to get yet another cf-ide adapter, male this time, to plug into the end of the IDE HD cable. Hopefully next week...plus ordered a VGA adapter so I can run a monitor. It's interesting how most of the clones ran standard VGA, but Apple decided to stay with the HD15 connector for so long.
