    Hi !

I was wondering if the power supply temp in my
    iMac is Ok...

    iMac 2.8 early 2008
    2 Go RAM
    SL w/ clean install...

    HD:47
    CPU:33
    GPU:50

    etc.

but the power supply is at 64 !! at idle...
When watching YouTube + a DVD, it
can climb to 80... All that with the fans
running with smcFanControl 300 rmp faster
    than the stock Apple spec...

    All other temps are Ok...

    Thanks for your help !

    Philippe

I've noticed the high temp also coming from the power supply but mine is high 70's cel and just from browsing.

PSU runs very hot because there's a lot electricity going through it. 80c is still OK

whew, thanks for that info. I took a pic of the temps when I started up and will take another in a hour or two of just browsing. minus the PSU.

    Thanks !!

Now I feel safer with Call of Duty 4 :D
But still run smcFanControl at 300 rpm more
    than the apple speed...

Life was better without SMC and iStat. There wasn't the sweeping panic and paranoia that meant every other internet post was about temperatures :D

    Idle temps:
    ------------

    Ambient temp is 30C
    CPU temp is 41C
    GPU is 52C
    Power supp is 53C
    Memory controller is 47C
    Northbridge is 66C
    Northbridge2 is 51C
    ========================
Especially as the computer feels uniformly warm, and nothing approaching 60C (which would be HOT to the touch). (and whatever is the oddball northbridge may have a stuck sensor; it's too high to really be taken seriously. Unless the heatsink wasn't put on right, but Apple's known for quality... if not, it's class action lawsuit time...)

I'm using iStat Pro and question its efficacy (the memory controller IS the northbridge, amongst other things).

While modern chips can handle 70~80C, it's usually best to keep them running as cool as possible. Not everybody can throw $2000 at a replacement iMac every couple of years.
