powerbook 15" lid warped?

smile??? curve???

wait wait wait...
the only problem is that it isn't a smile; it's more like a sad expression, or an "upside-down 'U', particularily, the left side (facing us) heading upwards, while the right side is OK.

and you said that:

The click probably comes from the latch coming back in contact with the thingie that holds it down. You do have to ask yourself, however, will you mind 2-3mm? Does it make that much of a difference to you?

well, i am just afraid that that means that in a matter of time, perhaps then the whole hinge thing will not work. because if it's really bad (i'd like to know if it'd get any worse), i want to return it before my return-date expires.

(what i mean by the "second-click" is that AFTER the lid is already closed, if i press it down w/ slight presure, if makes another click noise. don't know if this means that only one of the two latches latched on to the hook or not)

So you get the click when you press down the display, or when you let go of it and it returns to its original position? If it clicks when you press down, then it's probably the second latch, otherwise, it's probably just like I said before. And I think your hinge will be fine, it's really strong, especially compared to those on the TiBook.

apple has had lid and hinge issues with their laptops since the powerbook 100 in 91. kind of something you have to live with to own one. the 540 I had in 96 had bad hinge issues. so bad I was almost scared to close it at times. they need to focus a little more on perfecting the outer enclosure.

actually, i will call you on that. I disagree heartily. it may be less scratch-prone and have a superior keyboard, but what i have seen of the AlBooks in overall strength is not nearly as impressive as the TiBooks.

Are you talking about the hinge or in general? If you mean in general, well, I'm not about to drop my PB or hit it with something... ;)

I think this is intentional

My 15" AlBook is the same way and I think this is intentional. Get this: If you lay a flat object across the top of your lid while it is closed you will notice that it is concave at the part closest to the latch. As you get farther away from the latch and closer to the hinge, the screen becomes perfectly flat. I'm not sure why Apple did this, but it probably had something to do with making sure that grease from the keyboard doesn't mark up the screen like on the TiBooks.

The one thing that does annoy me is that it doesn't close as firmly as I would like it to. I had my AlBook sitting on the passenger car seat next to me one day with the lid closed and every time I'd go over even the smallest bump in the road I could hear the screen "rattling". The sound I was hearing was the little rubber feet bouncing off of the material underneath them. This can't be a very good thing...

I don't have problems with the latch itself though; it latches every time, whether I shut it fast or slow.

Lid Gap

I have definitely noticed this "smile." It doesn't bother me so much.

My concern is that I've definitely got a crooked smile.

When closed, the gap between the lid and the palmrest on the right corner of my display is defintiely larger than the gap on the left.

I'm trying to not be neurotic about this, but truth be told it drives me crazy. ;) It is after all, only a difference of a few mils, but still!

At least there's no dead pixels or white spots. ;)
