15" AlPB

FYI: Kodawarisan posted following (rough translation) on April 11:

15-inch new PowerBook G4 introduction by end of this month
It appears that Apple is going to introduce aluminum body new 15-inch PowerBook G4 by end of this month or early next month. Based on the information, there is an early shipment models on stock waiting for shipment at undisclosed factory in Taiwan.

Also on Kodawarisan today, (again rough translation):

15-inch PowerBook G4 introduction next week?
While new products such as; 12-inch and 17-inch PowerBook G4, iMac, iBook, and eMac has been introduced, introduction of the last model, new 15-inch PowerBook G4 is going to take place next week. According to the information, new 15-inch PowerBook G4/1Ghz model will contain FireWire 800 port (800Mbps), backlight keyboards. This would reduce the differences between new 15-inch model and the 17-inch model and only differences would be the screen size.

Just for a note. All “rumors” are written in most passive tone in original Japanese. The level of passive voice is hard to replicate in English but I just wanted to mention this fact. The consequence of this is that they are not binding themselves to the ‘”rumors” but rather reporting what they learned through undisclosed sources.

I sure hope it's true! :D

I sure hope it isn't! I haven't been waiting 4 months to get a laptop so I could buy one that IS NO FASTER THAN WHEN I STARTED LOOKING 6 MONTHS AGO!!

sheesh.. if this is true, this will be a huge disappointment.

I was hoping for atleast a 1.2 - 1.4, if not a 970 (yeah, I know I'm dreaming).

For those who think that the PC laptops are speed deamons I can personally tell you they are everything but that. My mother's 2.4 GHz P4mobile feels very very sluggish against my iBook 500. Granted it has less ram (though not much less) than my ibook it has twice the bus speed and almost 5 times the clock speed. Aside from booting (which I hardly ever do with my mac) the iBook does things much faster. I was also only successful in installing the verizon DSL on the ibook, it wouldn't work on any PC in the house.

So in the words of Public Enemy:

"DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!"

But those of you who think that it is acceptable to charge premium prices for a 1ghz G4 laptop, I can tell you, you are wrong.

"DON'T BELIEVE THE APPLE HYPE"

I still think it is not wrong to hope for a speed increase after about 8 months or so.

I hope that it's wrong, too. (Though part of me hopes it's right, but I'll come back to that.) I would really like to see a more substantial upgrade than just getting what the 17" already has. After all, in speed comparisons, the 1GHz 15" Ti and the 1GHz 17"AL come out almost dead tied. (The only notable exception being in very memory intensive process the DDR RAM in the 17" gives it about a 25% advantage.) So, simply upgrading to what the 17" already has really wouldn't be that much of an upgrade.

Unfortunately, I don't think that we'll ever see 1.2GHz or higher clocked G4s in the PowerBooks. They're just too hot. Yes, we might see them if/when Moto releases the 7457 G4 chip, but who here really thinks that's going to happen this summer? I think a dual 2.5GHz 970 Power Mac, with a 1.4GHz 970 PowerBook along side is more likely than that.

Just my thoughts...

Does anybody think that the new 15" PowerBooks would be introduced at an event, such as WWDC? New sized models of existing products such as the 14" iBook was introduced at MWSF '02, and the 17" iMac at MWNY '02. If so, doesn't look like we'll see new 15" PowerBooks next week since special press events are always announced a week ahead of time.

That's a good point, but not definitive, I don't think. The update to the 15" PowerBook, if it were simply updating to bring it in line with the other ALBooks, would be a rather lack-luster update, and I think that Apple wouldn't want to make too big a deal out of it. Sure, a nice splash on the front page of the Apple web site, but probably not a press event.

Here's hoping. I'm looking to buy by the end of next week. I've been hoping and hoping to see a 15" AlBook by that time. If not, the 15" TiBook is an excellent product, and I'll be happy with it.

15" PB 1Gig Super Drive $1899

Based on my own experience I would say the new 15" is right around the corner. My school, San Francisco State University, is offering deals on the current 15" 1GHz w/ super drive for $1899. You put down $100 deposit, and when they get 10 people to sign up, they order them. I almost picked one up but figured they're only going to go down in price so might as well wait to see what the new 15" is like in case I decide to fork out the extra dough for the new version.

In any case, I'm ready to switch from PC to powerbook! I just ordered my 15GB iPod yesterday, picked it up for a good deal, $320. I can't wait for the new 15!

If you possibly can, I'd seriously recommend waiting. The new 15" is coming, and it will be an improvement over the TiBook (perhaps minor, perhaps very major). So, unless you're getting a TiBook for a deal, such as those that have been mentioned, I'd try to muddle through if I were you.

powerbook rebates

macmall.com is offering $50 off the powerbook until may 25th. I don't think they are anymore in the know than we are, but usually when apple promos are over we see new products shortly after.

Besides the upgrades mentioned... the new 15" TiBook better have the same FSB as the 17" model... and integrated bluetooth. Would be nice if they shipped with OS 10.3 too :)

I'm hoping the PB will get a speed bump. I just want to run SuSE linux on the darn thing, so the OS is less important to me then the size, speed, etc...

I had actually ordered one of the 17" PB's, after the Apple Hype machine went into full gear, but after constant shipping delay's I starting looking at the Centrino machines, and canceled my order out of plain frustration with Apple customer service (I ordered direct).

While I would rather have a Powerbook 15", due to the form factor, and the asthetics, the 1.4 - 1.6 centrinos are quite a bit faster in rendering applications (such as GIMP), than my friends 1gig PB Ti. Why Jobs has screwed himself with Motorola is beyond me. OSX is a unix varient (which is a good thing!), it would not be difficult at all to port it to an Intel or AMD chipset. Anyone who has run KDE on Linux knows that OSX took a page right out of the open source communities book (which BTW is fine with me).

Some would say that "Apple wont do that because they are a hardware and a software company". Well, people loading OSX onto a Dell would be the least of my concerns, Apple could simply choose not to support them. Many would still buy the Apple product due to the form factor, battery life, etc....
