I think this is a pretty dumb question, but if I close the Powerbook during a formatt, will it continue to formatt the hard drive if I do this? Or will it just go to sleep and do nothing? It is taking quite a while to formatt 92GB using 7-passes and I don't want to leave it open with the LCD on overnight.

I think it will go to sleep. I wouldn't try it. Just turn the brightness all the way down and your LCD will be fine.

I can't even turn down the brightness on it during a formatt. When I push the brightness down key it does nothing.

Hmm. Do you have an external monitor and a USB keyboard/mouse? Shut the lid and plug that stuff in and computer will work but the LCD will stay off.
