PowerBook does not recognize USB device

Hi

My PowerBook with OSX10.5.8 does not recognize an USB device (a footswitch for transcribing).
I tried:
- Connecting the device to another PowerBook (it worked)
- Finding the device in the System Profiler (it doesn't show up, and neither does my external keyboard or my USB stick I plugged in for testing that. I'm not 100% sure I'm looking in the right place, though)
- restarting the laptop with the device already plugged in

Any ideas what I might be looking at?

Ah, and I also tried if the ports work fine, they do work with other USB devices.
