I have an out of state friend who has a 12" PowerBook G4 that is new to him. It won't boot, but shows the Apple logo and a cogwheel. It won't go past that stage, and the only activity is seeing the cogwheel spin. I walked him through the basics (safe boot, PRAM reset) and the machine stubbornly refuses to finish the boot process. It seems to have no boot bong, or it is so faint he can't recognize it. I can't hear it when he restarts the machine while I'm on the phone with him.
Trying anything, I had him hold the Option key at startup. The machine ignored this, and went to the Apple screen and cogwheel again.
I'm assuming that the disk is OK since the machine never displays the flashing folder. Something in the back of my mind tells me that is not a sure thing.
The machine has a non-original power brick and a dead battery. It does seem to work OK with this, at least as far as it gets.
Any suggestions on how to bring this machine back to life?
Thanks,
John
