My powerbook was working fine but i shut i down over night and when i turned it on the next morning it refused to boot. All i got was a grey screen with the folder icon which flash between a question mark and the finder icon.

I reinstalled OS X but still it wont boot!

Does ayone have any ideas on what to do

Boot from Mac OS X Install Disk 1 and try repairing the disk and/or permissions in Disk Utility (its under Utilities).

I have also tried that and everything was fine

Well, since I can't think of anything else, try taking it to an Apple Store. Or, try formatting the HDD and installing OS X. Formatting is in Disk Utility (must be booted from Mac OS X Install Disk 1). If you have any data on the HDD you want to keep, bootup into Firewire Drive Mode, if you have another Mac available.

Sorry to say it, but it sounds like you've got a dead hard drive. Pretty common with laptops. Hope you have AppleCare and recently backed up your files 😱

It works now!! i zeroed the hard drive before re-installing OS x and it works fine now. which is lucky because i replaced the HDD not very long ago beacuse it failed!
