I don't seem to be able to shutdown my Powerbook (12" 1.33Mhz 768MB 10.3.7) from the Finder menu. I'm not sure when this problem started occurring as i rarely shut down the machine, but i've certainly been able to do so. Only way to shut down machine is to press and hold the power button.

Only thing i've really tried, apart from making sure all applications aren't running, is holding down the shift key when booting the machine. Is this safe mode? It certainly took a lot longer to boot up, but the problem still presists.

As anyone else had this problem? Can anyone offer any help?

Many thanks and i apologise if this as been asked before.

    That does sound odd.

When you Shut Down, the loginwindow background process tries to quit all open processes (background and foreground ones). If the process succeeds shutdown occurs. So it might be worth having seeing if anything is 'hanging' when you attempt to shut down, force quitting then should do the trick.

On a more general level I would definitely recommend repairing permissions.
