Hello everyone,
I just got a B&W PowerMac G3 and when I booted it up it chimed but did not show any video. I think it's because of my graphics card. Some of the pins were bent. I need to buy a new one. Anyone have any suggestions for a graphics card I can put in there. I will be running Tiger and I don't want the card to be too expensive.
Thanks

For OS X, I'd suggest a flashed Geforce FX5200. Mine is PNY branded with dual VGA, and it is what I was advised to buy.

Some folks will use a 6200, but it can cause bus congestion issues.

Both of these cards give you Core Image support.

The Radeon 7000 is available inexpensively as a Mac edition card, and while it's a big upgrade over a Rage 128 it's not remotely the best "official" card. The Radeon 9200 is much better. The best official card is probably the impossible to find Voodoo 5.

to add to what @bunnspecial has said

the Radeon 9200 Mac edition is also probably one of the easer to find high end official Mac edition cards for a BW G3 there is usually always 1 or 2 on ebay for a good price (proper Mac edition Radeon 7000s are actually much harder to track down but they do show up from time to time but are nowhere near the best card for a BW G3) the Radeon 9200 will also work fully in Mac OS 9 and in BW G3 without a G4 CPU

if you have a G4 then flashing a FX 5200 is a good cheap option which gets you partial core image as well, and there is one type of PCI GeForce 6200 that can be flashed, but the later requires a G4 CPU but gets you full core image but if you have a lot of high bandwidth PCI cards installed can cause the PCI bus to throw a wobbly (the PCI layout of a BW G3 sucks), the FX 5200 will work with a G3 CPU however some 3d apps may cause the GeForce kexts (and consequently the machine) to crash without a G4 hence why I recommend a G4 if your using a FX 5200 however its not required. (the GeForce 6200 requires a G4 otherwise OS X wont boot, I flashed one here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/some-ppc-openmark-benchmarks.1848060/page-6#post-24270500 )

all in all if you want a nice OOB experience with the most OS support I would highly recommend a Radeon 9200 Mac edition (also have you checked the RAM on the BW G3? I found mine being a Rev A machine is VERY touchy when it comes to wanting to POST properly and usually ill just have to move the ram sticks around and then ill get a picture, also as long as none of the pins on the Rage 128 are touching each other then it should be fine, those pins on the card it self are for an optional DVD decoder card)

Yeah unfortunately some of the pins are touching each other. For some reason though when the card is in the computer and I plug the computer in the computer doesn't turn on automatically. When it's out it does. Also I've tried every possibility for the RAM. I have 2 512mb sticks.
[doublepost=1504053574][/doublepost]Well I found out why my graphics card wont work... The previous owner snapped part of it off

bend the pins so they are not touching each other and try and see if it will work then.

no one snapped anything off your graphics card :) thats just a left over mark from manufacturing

Ok, will do. I just want to make sure however that these are normal. Are they?

everything looks fine to me :)

BTW i noticed your sig shows 1GB of RAM what happened to the other 2 sticks? (512MB sticks in a BW G3 if they work, will only show up as 256MB each)

Bent back everything and still nothing shows up on the monitor...

I have 2 sticks of 512mb of ram. 1gb is the max and i have two open slots... Is something wrong in the setup?
[doublepost=1504059577][/doublepost]Also I don't have one of those small batteries yet, if that makes a difference. I just ordered one...
[doublepost=1504059756][/doublepost]Sorry to bombard you with so many questions lol. Also when I turn on the computer the keyboard doesn't seem to be on when I press the caps lock button the light doesn't shine.

if after a while the caps lock key does not light when pressed, then the machine is probably halting before it even initialises the graphics card, just to be sure if you remove the graphics card, does it respond at all to caps lock? if it does not then your issue is prolly with something else and not the graphics card

and good idea on the battery, the G3 BW should not need one to post but your machine might just be extra cranky like mine :)

So without the graphics card in the computer the mouse laser turns on but the caps lock doesn't. I tried to change which usb port it is in, but it's not changing anything.
[doublepost=1504061515][/doublepost]Is it possible that this keyboard is just not compatible with it. I don't have another one to test that out though.

UPDATE: I got my battery and installed it, unfortunately nothing changed, my graphics card is coming later today so hopefully that fixes everything.
