I thought that it is only proper to share my experiences today bringing my Powermac G4 PCI Gfx "Yikes!" back to life after its main HDD hit the ditch.

For some backgrounders, this powermac's original ODD was long gone that I cannot boot from the ODD by holding on "C" key at startup. This powermac cannot use firewire target mode even if it has two FW400 ports, so no way I can install an OS from either ODD and FW target mode.

What I did was to clone my working tiger installation on my dual 1.42 MDD FW800 unto my "new" HDD for the Yikes.

Upon putting the "new" HDD and starting up the Yikes, I was presented with the "Folder with ?" icon which means that it was not able to see the HDD.

Checked the HDD and it was set to CS (cable select). Further googling leads me to info that the Yikes will not boot with HDD set at CS, it must be set at Disk Select or DS and the HDD set at master.

Moved the jumper over from CS to DS as master, but still I was presented with a "Folder with ?" at start up.

Reset the PRAM with key combination Opt-cmd-P-R but still the issue persist. Reset the PRAM over Open Firmware, the issue would still persist.

I have decided to remove the PCI USB expansion card, and lo and behold, it booted straight into the desktop.

I think I might need a new PCI USB Expansion card.
