Yes, I am still thinking about doing something of a CPU upgrade, I just don't know what I can justify spending and also what will work and how big of a difference it will make. I appreciate all the advice! Please post here if you find a good deal on eBay or elsewhere on something that would be worth installing in terms of CPU upgrades.

macz1, I've found a video card already. I should've mentioned that earlier. Thanks for the tips, though! I bought the geForce4 MX from shu82 and it works very well. :)

G4 Mirrored Door Edition

Hello Everyone,

I've got a Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door Edition and I am trying to figure out what graphics card I could use to upgrade, I currently only have a GeForce4 MX 32MB AGP card, but I have been running an Apple Studio Display and another HD monitor off the DVI port on this card. My only problem is its only 32MB and I need to upgrade to at least a 64MB to run a new application I just got.

Any suggestions on a card with at least 64MB and an ADC and DVI port on the card?

Thanks in advance!

Some options

U can use those cards:

Radeon 9000 64MB Mac Edition
Nvidia 4600 TI 128MB
Radeon 9600 256MB Mac Edition
Radeon 9800 128MB or 256MB Mac Edtition

If you want to have a modified and flashed pc card for the G4, there are faster models on ebay from different individuals such as:

Radeon X800
Nvidia 6800
Nvidia 7800

Since you have the G4 MDD, you may have had noise issues and also cooling issues in the past, especially if you pack it with 4 HD's. If you haven't exchanged the fans or an advanced cooling system I would recommend the ATI 9600 with the passive heat sink. Works great with Leopard and most standard applications. The 9800 is faster but run's hot as hell. I had both and I sold mine because of heat.
If you are a gamer then I would go for one of the "mutant cards" you can get off ebay.
Unless you are under serious budget constrains, don't go for the Radeon 9000 or the Nvidia 4600 ti, those cards do not support Core Image and Quarz Extreme - the others do!!

However if you are looking to have serious speed gain, you may want to consider a cheap SATA controller and a Raptor 10K drive for startup.

Indeed. I had three U160 SCSI drives in my MDD G4 running off a U160 PCI card, of course. The drives were all 10K Quantum drives, and the difference in performance was substantial. The SATA option would definitely be worth the upgrade. I would think you'd get substantial performance improvements out of 7200rpm SATA drives, for that matter.
