has 2.5 GB RAM, the stock (crap) video card, 160 GB and 250 GB HDs. Good deal? What do you all think?

That model is not liquid cooled right?
I was just talking to someone yesterday who bought a dual 2.0 I believe and it was not one that was liquid cooled. He said about a month after buying it the fans would fire up long before the OS would even load. Just curious if you happened to have been able to see it run prior. Regardless, the price is certainly a steal.

no, it was fan cooled. I've heard way too many horror stories to buy a liquid cooled G5. I also won't be buying it unless I can see it running.

I actually used to have this model until it got destroyed in shipping by the USPS. It was a great computer and I'm psyched to get another. :)

I would ask what are you using this for?

A Core Duo 2, refurbed mini is $499 on Apple's site. This will absolutely trounce a G5 1.8Ghz.

Is this the 4 memory slot version? If so, it has an inherent flaw which prevents bus writes to below 70MBs, rendering any raid useless.

I have also read that x800's and 9800 are being phased out, suggest you find one before ATI pulls the plug.

A mini would be a better buy for most folks.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the core 2 duo minis sell for that little refurbed. Maybe the core duos.

Regardless, there are no minis on the refurb store.

And even if there were, I'm more concerned about the GMA 950 in the mini than I am about the more limited processing power of the G5.

There are Core Duo 2's for 499.

Its the refurb price, and they are sold out now... they were there this morning (base model of course), Core 2, Combo, 2Ghz.. etc. Remember this bases for $599, so am nearly 95% sure it was that model this morning for $499.

Granted you are correct about the video card, a GM950 is poor, but for encoding and power consumption the G5 scores poorly.

I know, I sold my G5 DP 2.0, and replaced it with a 1.5 Core Solo which outperformed the aforementioned G5.

For gaming tho, the G5 will be a better choice if you upgrade the video card.

Ah looks like I have fallen behind with pricing these days.

Well it's still a good deal compared to the other G5's offered today.

The only complaints about the Mac Mini is the laptop hard drive inside and the video card. Other than that, it's a sweet little machine.

with the desktop HD and better video, I think the G5 will be better for what I do than the mini. I just don't max out my processor very often.

Also, it's the 8 slot version. :)
