I almost forgot, the monitor has PIP. I did not even notice that when ordering it. You can split the screen, or have a small PIP in different sizes in different locations on the screen. Here are some pics.

Does it have dual inputs?

I tell yeah, I am digging what I am seeing from Dell in terms of LCD's. My school buys from Dell or Apple, and this year they bought all new from both and I love those Dell LCD's. They are terrific looking. I think I might get one of those too instead of an Apple Display.

Looks very nice. No problems with setup etc..?

Mine arrived! I am very happy with this monitor. I will definitely say that the whites are much whiter than my old cinema display. I was a little hesitant to order it because I love the Apple display, but, I have no regrets.

I have this monitor also (see here, post 81 for pics). It does have 4 inputs but you can only do picture in picture or picture by picture with a combination of DVI or VGA with s-Video or composite. You cannot do (for instance) DVI next to VGA. Not a deal breaker but you might want to know. I still love the monitor anyhow...

With the monitor spanning hack my iBook G4 800 *does* display on this monitor at 1680 x 1050 using VGA. It's one of the resolutions given so no further "hacking" is required. The iBook even detects the monitor as a Dell 2005FPW.

It really depends on what you are buying the monitor for. Sounds like you are buying for games. Then yes, you may want a PC monitor at 16ms, or a PC for that matter. If you are interested in the best that graphic design or color calibration has to offer, then you buy the mac and the cinema displays. Gamers aren't considered "professional" users, as is why the PM was created. I have a Mac and PC, and wouldn't consider using my PC for business, and I built it for what its capable of. Seems like if you want to play games, you can buy yourself a cheap 400 dollar Emachine or XBox. If you want professionalism, then go with the Mac. Know the difference before you buy.

At the least i beg to differ! Dell monitors look professional enough! if you are asking me if they are beautiful... definitely not ...donot get confused! an IBM thinkpad looks more professional than an aluminium powerbook but neither cute nor beautiful! Oh btw most of the Dell high end displays are Sonys. They have much better technology than apple does. Ever saw a S series bright view and compare with a powerbook or even Apple display? If you want your work place to be decorative and beautiful then get a mac. IF ARE IN A BUSINESS YOU GET WHAT IS MORE PRODUCTIVE FOR YOU!

since when is professionalism tied with mac (only)? Oh the color calibration of a pink tinted apple display is the best!!

Dell monitor

I too own a Dell monitor. I got the WC1700, widescreen 17" LCD. I used a Dell coupon and got the TV/monitor for $450 plus tax, free shipping. I could not be happier. Every input you can think of, s-video, VGA, DVI, composite, coax... HDTV ready, wall mountable, tons of cables already included. If there is one gripe, its tiny, the resolution is 1280x768. The same height as the native resolution of my 12" PowerBook to which it is hooked up. But I LOVE the widescreen. I can also watch TV PIP in any corner of the screen.

It was also very easy to set up. No drivers needed (it came with a CD for Windows). I'll recommend this monitor, or any Dell monitor, any day.

2001FP

I would personally vote for the 2001FP (non-widescreen version) because it uses the standard 1600x1200 resolution which games and wallpapers, other various things all support without hitch.

I currently run my pooC through one of these, and I cannot wait to hook up my Mac whenever I finally get one :p
I run it now through a R9800p that is slightly overclocked and in games COD:UO and UT2k4 I see absolutely no ghosting or blur. I get great framerates, and on the 2001FP the response is 16ms (I believe white-black, not sure about colour switching though).

Anyway, there is my ,02

What's the warranty coverage?

I have been out to Dell's site and have looked all over for the warranty coverage on the 2005FPW. Can't find it anywhere.....

Thanks for this thread guys... I think. I just bought the 2005FPW, even though I don't plan on buying a Power Mac for a couple more months, just because it was so cheap with coupons with no tax or shipping.

2005fpw.jpg

Thanks?? ;)

How did you get away with no tax? Oh well, I only spent ~$80 more (diff coupons), which is still $594.14 cheaper than if I bought the Apple Display as planned. (some coupons found here: http://www.slickdeals.net/forums/t54792.html?&page=191&pp=15)

Even my mac-advocate friend (who is still yearning to buy a mac, and hates pcs/windows) convinced me to buy the Dell IMMEDIATELY!

I too am confused about the warranty information. I found this early, but now clicking the same link takes me somewhere different:
"Monitors carry the longer of either a 3-year limited warranty or the remainder of the warranty for the Dell computer to which the monitor will be connected."

Can someone confirm the warranty displayed on their invoice?

Dell Home only charges sales tax in a couple of states, while Small Business charges tax in almost every state.

Also, the viewing angle is +-88 degrees, which equals 176 degrees. I think Apple's is only 170.

My 2005FPW just arrived on tuesday and I have it hooked up to my 15 inch PB with DVI. It looks awesome with no dead pixels. $564 shipped w/ coupons. I'm planning on buying a new powermac for it whenever the updates happen, but only if they include a PCI-expressx16 slot in place of an AGP slot.

Thanks for the info.

How does the colors look compared to the PB 15"?

I have a coupon for 25% and i got approved for interest free till 1/06; so I am very tempted. Just wish I could find the extra $40 off coupon.

BTW, what shipping company do they use?

Colors look A LOT brighter and more vibrant. I thought my pb screen was pretty good until I set them up side by side. The dell screen is very nice!

Dell has been running $40 coupons pretty often recently, so it might be worth it to wait for another one to come out. Check slickdeals.net often.

I worked for Dell at a mall kiosk this time last year and they had just switched from FedEx to UPS for shipping to HOME customers. Of course it could have changed.

On a side note, it was one of my co-workers that convinced me to switch to a mac!

My 2005FPW is in transit via UPS Ground currently.

And what makes you think that the Apple Display has any better color calibration?

Mine arrived today. Looks like I got the last batch before the hold. Using employee discount and a 25% off coupon I got the monitor for something near $550. Crazy!

Plugged the unit in and the system automatically detected the monitor, set the correct resolution and loaded the default color profile. I haven't done a full calibration yet (w/ SuperCal) but let me tell you...

this monitor looks fantastic! Out of the box the vibrance of the colors and the brightness is just amazing. The picture getting any better is just mind-boggling.

The unit rotates (I didn't know that) plus 4 USB ports is real nifty. PIP doesn't have much use for me.

I'm very impressed with the viewing angles and contrast ratio; on my old Samsung LCD the colors would fade/change as I moved my head. Not so with this Dell.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with this monitor. The Apple display may be better (and honestly, that's open for debate) but I don't think they're twice as good. The Dell has superior specs as well.

I don't know how I'm going to use all this desktop space! :D

strip it, strip it good.

What about taking that beast of black monitor bezel and taking off the dell badge and paint it silver, professionally of course (nail polish would work too I guess) I think it would compete. I think the black brings it back to what Apple does not want. Would you want S. Jobs walking into your home and seeing an ugly dell (M. Dell is a Bush supporter) monitor next to such fine work of a mac?

I am going to go with a no.

None-the-less, Apple should drop the price on their monitor!

Cheers.
