    Hi All,

Could somebody please tell me which is the best graphics card for a 2004 PowerMac G5 (Dual 2.5GHz)?
I have an ATI Radeon 9600 XT with an ADC display, which I would like to sell and buy a Aluminium Cinema Display... Preferably a graphics card with 256 MB VRAM or more (if possible). :)

    Thanks, Alex.

The hot card in this forum right now is the FireGL X3. It will have 256mb ram.

The next best card would be the Radeon 9800 Pro. You'd want to find the Special Edition because that one came with 256mb. The rest are 128mb standard. There are two versions of the standard though. One is a G5 only card (but will work in a G4 with taped pins) and the other is a retail version that will work in both the G4 and the G5 (without taped pins).

Don't also forget about the 6800 Ultra, which was actually introduced with the 30" ACD. It has 256MB of VRAM and can drive two 30" displays.

It's a small step down from the X800, but a big step up from the 9800.

The 9600XT you have now should be fine for a 23"

Thanks, and I now know that it should be fine, but I would really like one with 256MB lol.

The 9600 Pro PC&Mac has 256mb of VRAM and can drive one 30" display...it's overall not as good of a card as the 9600XT, though.

I'll be looking out for some 6800 Ultra's on eBay and Amazon. Thank you for your help! :)

Is it appropriate to hijack this thread?

I recently acquired a Quad G5 and want to know my options on the video card. It currently has the 6600.

I want to run a 24" or a 30" Apple display with decent performance? Are my options the same as those in this thread from 2013 about 2Ghz Dual Proc G5s with PCIe?

    Yeah, pretty much 6600LE, 6600, 7800, Quadro FX 4500 or X1900.

I have a Quadro 4500 in my 2.3DC and a X1900 waiting for my G5 Quad to arrive.

I am told that the X1900 is the better card and it only takes one slot. Which is why it will be going in my Quad when it arrives. The Quadro FX4500 is a pretty good card though - despite taking two slots.

My current load out on my current G5 is the Quadro and two 6600s for a total of six displays. Works well.

Once my Quad G5 arrives I will install the X1900, one of my spare 6600s bought specifically for this Mac and one of the 6600s currently in my 2.3. That will give the Quad my same set of six displays and the 2.3 four displays.
