Powermac Optical Out question

I'm getting a home theater system and will hook up my PMG5 to it via optical. Does the G5 only output optical for sources that are encoded for it (DVDs) or will it output audio on the optical port for all sounds (iTunes, movie files, ect)

One more quick question.

I've also heard there's lag with optical, since the computer has to encode then the receiver has to decode. When watching a movie or something, won't the audio and video be out of sync? Or is it not noticeable?

Should be no lag at all.

SPDIF and AV processors have no buffers and all works in real time.
