I have a preorder through Power Max and they sent out an email today with the following information - I can't vouch for its accuracy but it could explain some of the conflicting responses people have gotten from stores.

Here’s the way Apple is handling initial delivery of the new MacBook: No stores, including their own, will have stock to speak of -- possibly for as long as 3-4 months. The MacBook is going to be highly constrained for quite some time.

In an attempt to be fair, Apple has instituted a policy to drop ship straight to all end users from its factory in first-in first-out priority. Even Apple Store employees have been given the directive to point people to online ordering.

The confusing aspect of this process is that once an order is put into that system there is no stopping, changing, canceling, or generally even finding out how much time is left before it ships. Accordingly, we have no other way to process a MacBook order than charge your card, place the order with Apple, and wait for it to ship. The good news is that all orders are being handled on a first-in, first-out basis, and we're being told those shipments should release in a matter of 2-3 weeks.

I agree it sounds off, but many people have posted here saying they called Apple stores and were told they would not be in stock.

EDIT: Apparently other stores have confirmed they have stock? It just sounds like a mess.

For tomorrow, yes. But I see no reason why they wouldn't be in the Apple stores after the weekend.

LOL no stores including their own will have them for 3-4 months. Yeah that doesn't sound right

Seriously, 3-4 MONTHS! BS... I could see re-sellers not getting them at launch and having to wait a few weeks maybe even months but no way would they release a new laptop and not have stock at a flagship store for a quarter of a year.

Sooooo.... you get the option either to order with PowerMax who will "charge your card and wait", or just order from the Apple Store who will wait, then charge your card at the moment of shipment.

That's a useful store then.

agreed, even iPhones don't have such a long wait time. the only thing has such a long shipping hold was the mac pro. but the mac pro was a made in USA product, apparently macbook isn't.

I work in an Apple Specialist reseller location. I will vouch for the part where they're on allocation (so every reseller has a fair chance and bigger resellers don't get to hog it all). We were told allocation could last up to 10 weeks, similar to the Mac Pro, but orders will be released as fast as they can be, being no longer than the stated time on apple.com. The only exception being CTO machines with the 1.3ghz processor.
