I actually do try pretty hard to fire them up whenever I can. I spread my computer use over the top few pretty well. Some of the slower ones may go a month or two between powering up.

You should start a thread about the iBook project, I think it would help a lot of people and be interesting too.

Oh I will. I actually created a lengthy write-up with pictures but switched to another app on my iPhone and when I switched back the page reloaded(low memory?) and I lost my entire post :(. Figured I'd write it up again sometime soon lol.

Didn't realize that my TAM is in demand:

The TAM is definitely one of a kind! :)

Unfortunately, I live in a Japanese home where space is a premium. So lately I've been eliminating older computers as they take too much space at home. :(

Just out of curiosity did you have all of the broken ones at the same time? How did you use that many? as servers? rendering farm?

Awesome! :)

Sure holds it's value after all these years.

sure they do and they are well worth to buy ,awesome beasts if fitted with a even rarer G3 upgrade card running OS 9.2.2...., and the sound is awesome too , nothing you usually hear out of computers original speakers ,when a mate had his iMac 27 inch i7 here to upgrade to ssd and to take the display panel apart to clean it inside from the smudges he did want to do a straight swap .... i was upset

i still have My TAM

If certainly I have the money I would buy the TAM. It's a piece of history, rare. Sure it is not as fast as the current apple offering, but who cares? They are just beautifully designed and crafted equipment, a piece of art in itself.

yes it certainly is a piece of art , and actually i would go as far as saying its the real predecessor of the current LCD iMac's

and i have to add something , the keyboard of the Tam is a work of art itself with a "removable" touchpad that slots in the middle of the palmrest ok doesnt support mulitouch but who cares ,that was 1997

spartacus_kb.gif

why Apple did not continue that Keyboard design is something i willl never understand
with the leather palmrest it's so comfortable to use :)
and the Tam came with a remote control too

I am curious, do all the old Mac's you own still work, and do you use them or just collect them? I do envy the fact that y'all have acquired some sweet computers.

For me, they all work as they are supposed to be, except for the dualie 1.42 that recently the lobo was fried.

It is not that hard fix them, and I have learned a lot from them.

I never intended to be a PowerPC collector. It's just that I hate to toss a working machine.

Current list, all working with OS/X 10.4.11, and all with AirPort:

PowerMac G4 400 MHz (Sawtooth), 1 GB RAM, 2x 120 GB HD
Powerbook G3 400 MHz (Pismo), 1 GB RAM, 60 GB HD
iMac G3 400 MHz (Ruby), 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD
iBook G3 700 MHz (Dual USB), 640 MB RAM, 20 GB HD
iMac G4 800 MHz (15" Sunflower), 1 GB RAM, 120 CB HD

Departed:

Power Macintosh 7500, 500 MHz G3 upgrade, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB Drive (ancient OS, trashed)
iMac G3 500 MHz (Graphite), 512 MB RAM, 30 GB HD (given away long ago)
Powerbook G4 800 MHz (Titanium), 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD (broken, trashed)
Xserve Dual G4 I GHz (Rev 1), 2 GB RAM, 4x 120 GB HD (broken, parted out, trashed)

It was not a very happy day for me when Apple switched to Intel.

Just out of curiosity did you have all of the broken ones at the same time? How did you use that many? as servers? rendering farm?

most of them I had at the same time. I bought them on ebay with missing parts. Every one of them not have a power supply. So I was going to repair one at a time.

Some of the computers I ended up damaging in the repair attempts. :(

Blue and White G3: My very first two :apple: Mac. I bought these two at same time in ebay auction. For like $0.99 each not including shipping. Nothing else included, which I bought later. Right now I only have one monitor (which is one reason why I prefer :apple: iMac, and all laptops and netbooks everywhere) a ViewSonic VX2245WM and the Blue & White had 9.2.2 in it, and it adjusted to the monitor resolution!! :D  :p Unfortunately this was before Classilla, and so I went through numerous upgrade process to be able to boot Tiger on it. I got a larger hard drive, extra hard drive card, etc. (and also added USBs... also I love the Blue & White because they contain ADB Keyboard Port) These processors are way too small for Tiger, plus I bet some of the hardware was defective. I went back to 9.2.2 once Classilla was released. ;) The extra Blue & White I was going to repair, but, I ended up using it for parts, and then one of them sparked.

PowerBook 1400 series: again I was a complete idiot. The keyboard malfunctioned on one of them, and I tried to temporarily replace keyboard with other one, as it did not have built in ethernet. I stripped a screw, forced heatsink off, ... and then after the damage was done I realized that these powerbooks have external ADB keyboard slot, which I in fact have a working ADB keyboard!! :(

So I only had a few of these working at a time.

Soon I will get all the tools need for ANY and EVERY repair. :)

I must update my inventory of :apple:

I now have 3 broken powerbooks. I don't have any of them.

I now have added to collection:

3 :apple: clamshell ibooks. 9.2.2 and OS X Cheetah Edition. But I only use them to boot into 9.2.2. All they need is RAM upgrade. They even came with Power Supplies.... Yo-Yo ones!! :D  :p All have AirPort card. Batteries on all of them, and two of the batteries work.

I use them for everything except of what you mentioned lol. I have them all as spares right now...in case one breaks I can repair them conveniently and not stress about them. Also, I keep one computer on at all times... so what I do is put one to sleep after 24 hours of uptime, and then I wake another one up. This way they should not wear out. ;)

I do not know how to turn them into servers.
I also have never heard of the term rendering farm before.
But they do sound like nice ideas!! :)

Wanted:
Any model PowerMac G4

FYI: I'll have a Quicksilver for sale in a month or 2. It has an OWC 1.6ghz upgrade, 1.5gb ram & a few other little things.....getting married soon & she has several new macintels already !

you are welcomed to look me up anytime between now & then if interested. I would much rather sell it here than on fleebay or craigsthieveslist :)

jlmk !

I have one of those remotes around somewhere. Cool thing about those older remotes and IR stuff is that they were made by Sony so if you had a Sony TV remote it could work with the PPC Macs.
First found out about that when my dad turned off our Performa when he turned off the TV.

I just picked up a 15" PBG4 1.67 HiRez at an estate sale the other day. Didn't come with the battery. Missing all but 4 case screws and the RAM cover.

But since they were only asking $5 for it, I think it was worth it. :D
