My 17" doesn't see anything higher than 145 as well! My 2.3 G5 hovers around 140-155 with each processor being 1-3 degrees apart whereas my 2.7 is like 15 degrees apart.

A difference is, of course, normal because the LCS pumps hot liquid from one processor to the next before it is cooled.

I don't know what it is like on a 17" in terms of pads vs. paste. On my 15" I replaced the system controller pad with a nice coat of paste as the pad was too far gone, and new paste on the GPU and CPU.

I don't know what it is like on a 17" in terms of pads vs. paste. On my 15" I replaced the system controller pad with a nice coat of paste as the pad was too far gone, and new paste on the GPU and CPU.

It's paste everywhere. On one of the chips the paste was super thick! I believe they did the same thing on the 15". Replaced the paste and I noticed instant 10 degree drops.
 
After 1.5 hours of web browsing with Firefox 26 with the CPU locked at 1499 MHz the whole time:

Temp: 129 F (54 C)

Ambient temp: 75 F (23.8 C)

Fan speed: 7700 rpm

Surface: laminate countertop
 
Wow just played some BlackShades for about 20 minutes and I took a look at my GPU temp and just about crapped my pants, it was running around 160 F. I've never seen it over 140 F. I should probably be pretty concerned about that, huh. :eek:

If it doesn't shut down then I guess it is okay.
 
I noticed, that the heatsink is doing it's job on my PB well. While the lappy does heat up once it gets going, it cools down fairly quickly after whatever intensive task it encountered. For instance, I ran the game for several minutes, and temps were in the high 140s, but as soon as I quit they dropped down to around 115 (CPU underside) and 127 (GPU), which is around where it usually operates.

When I am pushing my PowerBook it is about 145. I used Arctic Silver Ceramique on the GPU, CPU, and on the system controller that was originally a pad.

I have pads on everything that had pads, and a fresh job of AS 5 done on the CPU. I think it's about as cool as it's gonna get. :p
On the PowerBook Medic site he sells a screw set, which includes the standoffs and spring screws that I broke of the MB that help secure the heatsink, and someday I might tear down my PB just to see if I can resolder them on. I sortof doubt it would make a much bigger difference, however, and most likely isn't worth the trouble.

EDIT: The attachment I took when I last applied paste shows where the screws came off:

Mine just spent the last 6 hours compiling pretty much every library dependency in the world (it was an abolute mess and wasn't even done when I mercifully stopped it). CPU temps never got above 56 C. The fan was screaming away at over 8K rpm though.

Well my friend, you have a gifted PB :D
56C = 131-ish I think, but that's somewhat weird, I don't think I've heard my fans reach 8K rpm, the highest I've seen at least is 7K.
 
I'm so winning this. Thirty seconds after boot up, idling.

Those GPU temperatures are normal. The thermistor has a small range and being outside of that range causes it to loop. It won't show the real temperature until about 150F to about 220F.

Yeah, normally the highest fan speed I get is 7200 and that's fairly uncommon. This was at 8100 or so for 6 hours. I'm surprised the nearly 10 year old fan survived.

Yeah, I figured it's most likely not worth the trouble and there wouldn't be a hug difference if any at all. I think the heatsink covers the CPU well enough, if you look closely at the attachment again, you can see the imprint of the copper pipe in the thermal compound.

It isn't going to cause much difference at all so why bother.

Ah, I wondered why the GPU was showing crazy temps and the fans were not interested in the slightest. Or why the PB had not shut down from overheating.
 
17" DLSD Hi-Res.

Come to think of it, if the PB is only showing bogus GPU temperatures under 150ºF, how come others are measuring temps of 120-ish?
 
Is it normal that my fans run at such different rpms on my dual 2.0 power mac g5.
