I decided to try out PowerPhotos because I’ve heard a lot of good things, and I don’t entirely trust the new Ventura duplicate finder Al. For about $30 US it seemed worth it to me. I have to say it’s generally really good, and it scanned my considerable library (~45,000 photos) relatively quickly.
The duplicate finding algorithm works well, but I’ve discovered an issue with HDR photos—if you have the setting on your phone turned on to “keep original and HDR version” it seems like PP treats the two copies as the same even though visually they’re clearly different. I find this surprising since it should catch the visual differences.
Just a word of caution for anyone using these kind of duplicate photo cleaners: they’re not perfect and you’ll still probably want to do a manual check before deleting, as painfully time-consuming as that can be for larger libraries.
