Hello,
My MacPro 5,1 power-supply is making a buzzing sound. I have already tried cleaning it out, but the sound still comes and goes. I'm thinking of buying another power supply to have a backup as I use my system for work. The model on my PSU is dps-980bb-2. While online I did see some units without the -2 at the end of the model number. Are they compatible with my system? Also is Delta or the ACBell better?

A bad power supply wouldn't cause any UI lag would it? I might have to upgrade my GTX 680 to fix that, but that's on another topic.

Thanks!

Also is Delta or the ACBell better?
Same PSU from 2009 to 2012, there are two OEM manufacturers of PSUs, Delta and AcBel:

  • Delta DPS-980AB DPS-980BB-1 DPS-980BB-2 #614-0435, #614-0454
  • AcBel FS8001 #614-0436, #614-0455
Both fail overtime, but I personally prefer Delta PSUs. Cooler, more modern circuit with better capacitors and a lot better design than AcBel. The AcBel is practically a MP3,1 power supply tweaked to MP4,1/MP5,1 specs.

In case it matters, many (maybe most or all) mid 2012 MP5,1's in the USA were issued with Delta PSUs. Assume they must have either been in surplus so cheaper to use or else had better results/reliability at that time.

My 2009's PSU died about 2 years ago and I bought a "refurbished" one on ebay for $75 and replaced it. Haven't had any issues since. Hopefully this PSU lasts for the rest of this Mac's usable life....

I can say that 2 Delta PSU had horrible buzzing, 3 ACBel's did not have any buzzing.
It also seems that Apple used mostly ACBel's in Europe
I can only assume that the Delta has the buzzing issue when used with 230V
