I am not sure where this question belongs. Please move if needed.

A teacher has a PPC g4 running 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.1. I am going to replace the PPC G4 with an iMac G5 running 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.0.5.

I need to backup all of the iTunes music on the PPC G4 and restore it the music to the iMac G5.

My question, when I perform the iTunes backup on the PPC, I need to restore it on the iMac so it looks identical.

How do I backup the iTunes music and playlists on the PPC to look identical on the iMac?

Backup the iTunes folder in the Music folder and restore that to the new Mac before starting iTunes for the first time on the new Mac. You may also want to copy over the iTunes preferences file(s).

What I need is to have iTunes 11 look identical to iTunes 9. Another words, the playlists listed on the left side and songs.

You need to turn on the Sidebar from the iTunes->View menu.

I know how to show the sidebar. What I am asking, when I copy the music and playlist to the iMac, I open iTunes 11, I want to make sure all of the playlists are listed.

Sadly no, you're not going to.

Problem 1: 10.5.8 is the last version of OS X to run on PPC Macs.

Problem 2: iTunes 11 requires OS X 10.6.8.

The best you could do on an iMac G5 is OS X 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6.3.

Problem 1: I am aware of 10.5.8 on PPCs.

Problem 2: I am aware that iTunes 11 can run on 10.6.8.

I am not asking whether or not iTunes is supported on any OS. That is not what I was asking for advice on.

The iMac running 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.0.5 is already in place. I just need to copy over the iTunes music and playlist from PPC G4 to iMac G5.

Ah ok, sorry, I see where the confusion arose now - it must be an intel-based iMac then, not an iMac G5 - the G5 is a PPC chip, and only macs using those chips had G5 in their name. I was just trying to stop you trying to use an actual iMac G5 to do the impossible. :)

Consultant's advice seems good.

The iMac G5 can only support up to OS X 10.5.8. 10.6 onwards is Intel only.
