I've seen several threads on various internet forums, but has anyone actually used one of them to effectively block advertisements in Mobile Safari?

Also is there any known method available to block AdMob ads in applications?

To block AdMob ads, add this to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 mm.admob.com

Be forewarned: many applications detect this blockage and complain. It's better than seeing the ads in my opinion.

Other options (non jb): use atomic browser, which has built in adblock; run a proxy server on a desktop machine (e.g. Bfilter for windows, glimmerblocker for osx), and point your iPad at it. The latter works for me at home, but it will also block abc player.
