I appreciate nobody has used the new chips yet, but on paper what kind of difference can we expect between the original M1 and the base M1pro with 8 cores CPU?
There is an obvious GPU advantage and the ability to run two external monitors.
Is that it?

I do a lot of Logic Pro work and some video editing. I don’t want to buy more CPU power than I actually need.

they said during the event:

- double the width of memory interace
- faster dram
memory bandwidth almost 3x faster than in original m1
- cpu up to 70% faster performance than m1 (although they probably mean that if you get the 10core version hmm)

It does sound like overestimation … just saying what I see in the presentation
time 17:09

Not sure how that transfers to geekbench score etc

Well, not much in terms of actual differences. Only performance. M1 Pro will be better at sustained performance, since it has more CPU cores. It might also be better at some stuff that requires high memory bandwidth to individual cores, but you are probably unlikely to hit that with video editing.

The balance of performance and efficiency cores differs between the 8 core M1 and the 8 core M1 Pro. The former has 4 performance and 4 efficiency cores, whereas the latter 6 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores.

I assume this is one of the contributory factors towards the difference in battery life between the 13 and 14-inch MBPs (20 vs 17 hours respectively by Apple's numbers), so you'd need to weigh up the importance of battery life vs outright performance I suppose.

The big battery factor is the display. This kind of display tech is unprecedented on a laptop and frankly, I have no idea how Apple made the panel so thin and energy efficient. MSI Creator 17 is much bulkier and has barely three hours of battery life…

OK, thanks.
I didn’t actually watch the event in full. Sounds like there are quite a significant number of differences even in the version with 8 cores.

those are the video playback metrics.. if you look at wireless web, the new 14inch only gets 11 hours versus the old 13 inch macbook pro that gets 17. That metric is scary cause you lose a TON of battery even just going to the base model 14

This is why as a non heavy user I just can’t pull the trigger yet. I would sacrifice so much battery life.

It is a matter of perspective though.
11 hours is more than my current MBP Early 2015, also most of the time I use it docked attached to an external monitor.

Damn right. Comparing the new 14" MBP' with the older Intel-based Macbook and other Windows laptops, 11 hours is great. Some people have been spoilt by the original M1
